Softball Edges Western Connecticut State in Regular Season Finale

Box Score

Hartford, Conn. - Sophomore CF Jenna Thomas (Orange, Conn.) went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored to help lead the Trinity College softball squad to a 3-2 victory over the Western Connecticut State University Colonials on Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference softball matchup in Hartford. Trinity, playing as the away team after the game was moved to Hartford from West Conn's field due to rain, finishes the regular season with an 18-13 overall record ahead of this weekend's New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Championship Tournament first round game versus Hamilton College. The Colonials fall to 19-16.

First-year Jordan Stephan (South Orange, N.J.) went the distance, striking out five while allowing just one earned run to pick up her sixth win of the season in the circle for Trinity. Stephan held the Colonials to six hits, two of which came off the bat of Annie Rosa (Washington, Conn.). Trinity finished with 11 hits, including two each from Thomas, senior tri-captain SS Courtney Erickson (Everett, Mass.), sophomore 3B Hannah Zukowski (Burlington, Conn.) and first-year 2B Maura Keary (Fairfield, Conn.).

Trinity jumped ahead in the second inning thanks to a two-out double off the bat of senior tri-captain DP Nicole Towner (Erie, Colo.). Thomas led the inning off with a single before moving up to second on a sac bunt by rookie C Alex Chambers (East Lyme, Conn.). After a fly ball out, Towner came up and crushed a double to right-center that brought home Thomas. West Conn scored a pair in the bottom of the second on a groundout and a passed ball to take a 2-1 lead.

The Bantams tied things at 2-2 in the following frame when Thomas singled home sophomore RF Kaitlyn DeCapua (Milford, Mass.). Stephan hit cruise control, retiring six consecutive batters before Trinity scratched across the game-winning run in the top of the fifth. Erickson led the inning off with a base knock before moving into scoring position on a single from Zukowski. Thomas followed with a fielder's choice that plated Erickson.

The Colonials put a pair of runners on in the bottom of the sixth with just one out but Stephan induced a ground ball out and struck out her fifth batter of the game to end the threat. West Conn went down in order in the seventh as the Bantams held on for the one run victory.
