Trinity Football Blanks Middlebury

Hartford, Conn. - Junior Qb Spencer Fetter (Winter Haven, Fla.) threw for 319 yards and two touchdowns and the Bantam defense picked off three passes to lead the Trinity College football team to a 28-0 victory over the visiting Middlebury College Panthers in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) action this afternoon on Jessee/Miller Field at Tansill Muldoon Stadium this afternoon.  Trinity improves to 3-0 and remains tied with Wesleyan and Williams for first place in the league.  The Panthers drop to 1-2.  Trinity visits Bates next Saturday and Middlebury hosts Amherst.

After a scoreless first quarter that featured an interception by Trinity junior S William Crowley (Milton, Mass.) that thwarted the game's opening drive at his own 20-yard line and several punts, Trinity got on the board on a 10-yard pass from Fetter to senior TE Jack Barrett (Holliston, Mass.) midway through the second frame.  The touchdown capped off a 65-yard drive that included two passes for a total of 50 yards from Fetter to senior captain WR DeVante Reid (London, England).  Both teams turned the ball over on downs in the other teams' zone, and Middlebury's Liam Roy picked off Fetter at the Panther 12-yard line later in the first half.

Trinity opened the second half with a drive from its own 25-yard line to the Middlebury 22-yard line but missed a field goal, only to score moments later when Fetter found senior TE Thomas Walsh (Pelham, N.Y.) for a 57-yard score on Walsh's first career reception.  The Bantams scored again early in the fourth stanza on an 86-yard interception return by senior captain LB Brian Casagrande (Madison, Conn.) and closed out the scoring with an 18-yard scamper to paydirt by sophomore RB William Kirby (Darien, Conn.).

Trinity had possession for almost 33 minutes and outgained Middlebury, 424 to 228.  Reid finished with 10 catches for 146 yards, while Girard had seven grabs for 79 yards and became Trinity's all-time leader in receiving yards with 2,423 to pass Tom McDavitt's 2,364.  Kirby ran 18 times for 56 yards and caught three passes for 26 more.  Three Middlebury quarterbacks combined to complete 14 passes in 36 tries for 118 yards and Panther signal callers Will Jernigan and Cole Kennon added 63 combined yards on the ground.  Greg Livingston paced the Panther receiving corps with 50 yards on eight catches.  Middlebury punter Cole Crider average d43.7 yards on nine boots.

Trinity senior captain DB Matt McCarthy (North Reading, Mass.) made a game-high 10 tackles (seven solo) and broke up a pass, while Casagrande had six tackles, junior LB Cade Klarides-Ditria (Seymour, Conn.) added five tackles and 1.5 sacks.  Bantam senior DE Noah Glantz (Scarsdale, N.Y.) notched two sacks and junior DB Justin O'Neil-Riley (Dorchester, Mass.) collected two tackles, three pass breakups, and an interception.  Roy made seven tackles for the Panthers.
