AMHERST, Mass. - Ruby Hastle scored the game-winning goal in the 98th minute to lead the Amherst College Mammoths to a 3-2 victory In overtime against the visiting Trinity College Bantams in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) women's soccer action this evening at Gooding Field. Trinity, which led, 2-1, after a goal in the 60th minute by sophomore
Sadie Rudolph (Weston, Conn.), ends the regular season with a 7-7-1 overall record and a 3-6-1 mark in the conference. No. 15-ranked Amherst finishes up at 13-1-1 overall and 8-1-1 in the NESCAC. The Bantams qualified for the NESCAC Championship Tournament as the No. 8 seed and will have a re-match of tonight's contest at the top-ranked Mammoths on Saturday at noon in the quarterfinals.
Trinity fell victim to an own goal in the 35th minute when Isabel Stern's shot hit the cross bar and bounced around wildly before ending up in the goal off a Bantam. The Bantams came back and scored in transition in the 42nd minute on the first career goal for sophomore forward
Dot Tilden (Hanover, Mass.). Trinity senior
Whitney Hoban (Winnetka, Ill.) advanced the ball up the right side to Rudolph, who sent a short cross to Tilden in the center of the box. Tilden gently settled the ball before rifling it past Amherst goalie Mike Fisher.
Rudolph gave the Bantams the lead with a great individual play, stealing the ball in the Amherst backfield and dribbling just inside the box before blasting the ball by Fisher. The Mammoths tied the score when Liza Katz fed Claire Nam for a header from the left of the box. Trinity senior goalkeeper Jen Stuart (Newburyport, Mass.) made a save on the lone shot-on-goal by Natalie Landau over the remaining regulation time, and Landau also hit the cross bar late. Neither team put a shot on goal in overtime prior to Hastle's clincher. Stuart and Fisher matched each other with three saves apiece.
