Trinity Baseball Splits With Mitchell

Hartford, Conn. - First-year RHP Ian Brown (Tampa, Fla.) struck out seven batters in five innings to collect his first college win and lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 6-4 victory in game two and a doubleheader split against the visiting Mitchell College Mariners in baseball action this afternoon on Murren Field in DiBenedetto Stadium.  Trinity which dropped the opener, 8-2, is now 3-3 entering another home twinbill against Lasell on Monday.  The Mariners are 7-4 and will visit Rhode Island College on Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Brown allowed one run in the first and another in the third but faced just 10 batters in his other three innings, while senior RHP Alex Shafer (Baltimore, Md.) tossed the last two innings with 4 K''s to earn the save.  The Bantams took a 4-1 lead in the second frame on a two-run homer to left by rookie 1B Seth Meth (Sands Point, N.Y.) , an RBI single by sophomore 2B Andrew Tuozzolo (Pittstown, N.Y.), and a sacrifice fly by sophomore SS Patrick Dillon (Bronx, N.Y.).  In the fourth inning, Tuozzolo led off with a single and scored on a hit by Dillon.  First-year Jack Mathews (Westport, Conn.) also singled in the inning and scored the sixth Bantam run on a double steal. 

Mitchell scored in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly by Hunter Yaworski (Brooklyn, Conn.) and in the eighth on an RBI single by Jeremy Sagun (Montville, Conn.).  Shafer came in with a runner on and none out in the eighth inning and allowed one hit and hit one batter.  Matthews and Tuozzolo were both 2-for-4 for the Trinity offense, while Sagun and Yaworski were both 2-for-4 for Mitchell.  Mariner starter Jakari Pellegrini (New Britain, Conn.) took the loss and fell to 2-3, while Sam Majewski (Brewster, Mass.) tossed three hitless innings in relief to keep the visitors in the game.

In the first game, Mitchell used a five-run sixth inning to break open a 2-2 game.  Trinity scored twice in the fourth inning on a two-run double senior co-captain C Alex Rodriguez (South Windsor, Conn.) and Mitchell answered with two in the fifth to chase Trinity junior starter Jimmy Fahey (Danbury, Conn.).  The Mariners took a 7-2 lead in the fifth , as Sagun and Steve Cochrane (East Haven, Conn.) each had two-run singles.  First-year lefty Ben Reyes (Framingham, Mass.) took the loss in relief, while Mathews and Meth were both 2-for-4 offensively for the Bantams.  Roalnd Thivierge (Portland, Conn.)went seven innings and allowed five hits and two runs with six strikeouts and one walk to improve to 3-0 for Mitchell.  Sagun was 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI for the Mariner offense.
