HARTFORD, Conn – A combined 43 points and 25 rebounds from senior Donald Jorden, Jr. (Tampa, Fla.) and first-year
Ben Callahan-Gold (New York, N.Y.) led the Trinity College men's basketball team to an 86-72 victory over Mitchell College on Tuesday night in Ray Oosting Gymnasium. The Bantams improve to 7-3 on the year following their second win over Mitchell this season while the Mariners drop to 5-8. Trinity resumes action with its first New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) matchup of the 2021-22 season at Wesleyan University this Friday with a 7 p.m. tip-off.
Playing in their first contest in 32 days, the Bantams trailed Mitchell 46-40 at the half as Mariners point-guard Mikey Buscetto tallied 16 points to fuel the visitors. Following the break, Mitchell held a nine-point lead with just over eight minutes to go but Trinity was quickly able to cut the deficit to just one point thanks to an eight-point burst with consecutive buckets in the paint from
Kualim Johnson (West Boylston, Mass.),
Will Dorion (Needham, Mass.), Jorden, Jr. and Callahan-Gold.
Hard-nosed defensive play from the Bantams proved to be the difference maker in crunch-time as a layup from Jacob Narvaez with 4:42 remaining turned out to be the last points scored by Mitchell on the night. Trinity then strung together a 17-point run to close out the game. The Bantams shot 10-for-10 from the free throw line during the game's final four and half minutes with a three pointer from senior captain
Darius Lue (Tampa, Fla.) and a dunk from classmate and fellow captain Jorden, Jr. putting the exclamation point on the home win.
Jorden, Jr. and Callahan-Gold each posted double-doubles on the night, finishing with 23 points and 13 rebounds and 20 points and 12 boards, respectively. Jorden, Jr. shot an impressive 78% from the field and also chipped in two blocks and two steals on the defensive end. Lue (13), Kualim (12) and Ethan McEachem (10) rounded out the five scorers reaching double-digits for the Blue and Gold while Dorian led the team with five assists and registered eight points of his own. Buscetto led Mitchell with 21 points with Narvaez and Alfonzo Stokes each recorded 15 points apiece.
