HARTFORD, Conn. – Senior
Lucas Michaud (South Portland, Maine) and sophomore
Kyle Tomaso (Newport, R.I.) each netted two goals to lead the Trinity College men's ice hockey team to a 6-2 win over New England Small College Athletic Conference opponent, Tufts University on Saturday evening in the Koeppel Community Sports Center. The Bantams improve to 8-6 with a 6-4 mark in conference play while the Jumbos drop to 2-10-1 (2-6-1 NESCAC). Trinity travels to Amherst College on Friday, Jan. 28 for a 7 p.m. puck drop while Tufts hosts Middlebury same day, same time.
The Jumbos took a 2-0 lead in the first period with goals from Tyler Sedalk (6:07) and Nick Schultze (10:05). Less than a minute later, Tufts had a two-on-one look but was turned away by sophomore goaltender
Patrick Pugliese who made an outstanding save, diving to his left to prevent the visitor's taking a 3-0 lead in the first period.
Michaud put the first goal on the board for the Bantams with the help of
Riley Prattson (Tolland, Conn.) at the 11:32 mark. Nearly five minutes later, junior defenseman
Andrew Troy tied the game up at 2-2 with assists by sophomore
Devan Tongue (Hampden, Mass.) and first-year
Nicholas Siffringer (Franklin Lakes, N.J.). Troy's goal marks his second in the last three games while Siffringer tallied his second career assist on the play.
In the second period, Tomaso gave the Bantams their first lead of the game and what would be the first of two power play goals for Trinity on the evening as classmate
Gerard Maretta (Brick, N.J.) extended his team's lead to 4-2 on another power play before the second intermission. The Blue and Gold then added two more goals in the final frame of the contest as Michaud registered his second tally just a minute and 23 seconds out of the break. Tomaso would later find the back of the net for his second time as well, with some nifty stick work, cutting back across the grain of the defense to create an open look at the goal which he sent top-shelf for the sixth Trinity goal on the evening.
The Bantams outshot Tufts, 47-27 while Pugliese recorded 25 saves in net and Jumbos' goalies Josh Sarlo (33) and Ryan Welch (8) combined for 41 saves.
