Trinity Women's Ice Hockey Shuts Out Williams

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - The visiting Trinity College Bantams salvaged a two-game road series at New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Williams College with a 2-0 victory this afternoon in women's ice hockey action.  Trinity improves to 6-2-1 and 2-1 in the NESCAC and the Ephs, who won last night's series opener, 3-2, are now 7-3 overall and 3-3 in the league.

Williams had early pressure, as Meghan Halloran had a one-on-one early backhanded chance and a rip from the point that were both stopped by Trinity sophomore goaltender Hannah Leclair (Kensington, Prince Edward Island).  Trinity's offense was equally aggressive early, peppering Williams goalie Chloe Heiting with 12 shots in the first period.  Leclair had another clutch save late in the first stanza on a breakaway attempt by Williams' Robin Kitazono to keep the game scoreless at the first break.

Trinity took the 1-0 lead midway through the second period when first-year Paige Kehoe (Manasquan, N.J.) maneuvered down the right wing and shot from the top of the circle. Heiting blocked the shot, but Bantam junior Stephanie Nevers (West Suffield, Conn.) was sitting on the doorstep and poked the puck in from the left side.  Leclair was stellar throughout, as Trinity held off two Williams power plays in the second period and both Meghan Halloran and Maddie Tix were denied by her on breakaways in the middle frame.  Trinity rookie Martina Exnerova (Nelahozeves, Czechia) stole the puck at neutral ice and cashed in on her chance from the right side to put the Bantams up 2-0 with 1:36 left in the second.

Leclair continued to frustrate the Ephs in the final frame, making 15 of her 39 saves.  The Bantam defense kept the home squad off the board despite playing down one or more skaters thanks to a pair of Trinity penalties down the stretch. Williams outshot Trinity, 39-21, as Heiting totaled 19 saves.  Trinity hosts NESCAC rival Hamilton for a two-game set next Friday and Saturday.
