Trinity Football Takes Down Williams

HARTFORD, Conn. - Junior RB Colin McCabe (Madison, Conn.) rushed 18 times for 177 yards, all in the second half, to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 32-13 victory over the visiting Williams College Ephs in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) football action this afternoon on Jessee/Miller Field at Tansill Muldoon Stadium.  Trinity remains alone in first place in the NESCAC at 6-0 while the Ephs drop to 1-5 with their fourth consecutive setback.  Trinity, now one game ahead of Middlebury with three games left to play, hosts Bowdoin next Saturday at 1 p.m.  Williams hosts Bates next weekend.

Trinity scored on the game 's opening drive, using 13 plays to go 63 yards and finishing it with a six-yard run to paydirt by junior RB Will Kirby (Darien, Conn.).  Williams answered with a touchdown early in the second quarter on a one-yard plunge by QB Dan Vaughn.  Both teams failed PAT tries, including a blocked kick on Williams; attempt by Trinity's Hunter Tully (Taunton, Mass.).  A 35-yard completion from senior QB Spencer Fetter (Winter Park, Fla.) to WR DeVante Reid (London, England) keyed Trinity next drive, and the Bantams to a 9-6 lead on a 27-yard field goal by Matt Jumes (Franklin, Mass.).  Midway through the second quarter, Trinity senior Kevin Clark (Hebron, Conn.) recovered a punt that had hit a Williams player at the Eph 35-yard line, and Fetter connected with rookie RB Tyler DiNapoli (West Haven, Conn.) for a touchdown with a double-reverse flea flicker on the next play to put the home team ahead, 16-6.  Williams rallied to score just before halftime with a 13-pay, 75-yard drive that ended with a two-yard touchdown run by Vaughn.

In the third quarter, Trinity rookie Jack Sokol (Medfield, Mass.) landed a punt on the Williams four-yard line and the Trinity defense forced a three-and out to give the Bantams the ball at midfield with 4:41 left before the final break.  McCabe rushed seven times for 49 yards on the ensuing possession, but a Trinity penalty forced them to settle for Jumes' second 27-yard field goal of the game and a 19-13 lead early in the fourth frame.  Trinity's defense was stout in the final quarter, forcing punts on all three Williams possessions.  The Trinity offense kicked into gear and score twice to put the game away, once on a 22-yard pass from Fetter to Reid and the second time on a two-yard run by DiNapoli set up by a 67-yard rush by McCabe.

Trinity ran for 217 yards and held Williams to 77 rushing yards and 195 total yards.  Fetter finished 16-for-24 passing for 220 yards and two scores and Vaughn was 10-for18 for 118 yards and also led Williams' ground game with 59 yards.  Neither quarterback threw an interception.  Reid was the leading receiver in the game with 78 yards on four catches and sophomore WR Sean Clapp (Wyckoff, N.J.) added six grabs for 65 yards.  Mike DeGasperis paced Williams with three catches for 52 yards.  Defensively, Trinity LB Brian Casagrande (Madison, Conn.) notched a game-high 11 tackles, including 2.5 tackles for loss, and broke up a pass, while DE Noah Glantz (Scarsdale, N.Y.) added six tackles and 2.5 sacks.  Chaz Cotton had seven tackles and broke up a pass defensively for the Ephs.
