Flaherty Delivers Game-Winning Goal in 2-1 OT Win Against No. 4 Amherst

The Bantams snapped Mammoths 10-game win streak to seal the third spot in the NESCAC.

HARTFORD, Conn. — As the time expired in regulation and the score knotted at one a piece, Caelin Flaherty (Upton, Mass.) came through for the Trinity College field hockey team as she scored the game-winning goal with 1:47 remaining overtime snapping Amherst's 10-game win streak in 2-1 victory on Tuesday. The Bantams and Mammoths finished the regular season with the same record of 12-3 overall and 7-3 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference. The graduate student notched her seventh goal of the season and third game-winning goal off a take away from an Amherst defender just outside the defensive circle. Flaherty made an incredible tackle, raced past the Mammoths in front of her and took the winning backhand shot for the dramatic goal. She also had six shots with a trio on goal.

Demarest Janis (Cos Cobb, Conn.) broke the scoreless tie to put Trinity on the board three minutes into the second half off the feed from Katrina Winfield (Wilmington, Del.). The Bantams held the lead until Anna Aiello finished in the circle for the Mammoths with just over five minutes remaining in regulation. The Mammoths were denied a single shot in the first quarter but the visitors turned up their attack in the fourth with seven shots as three were turned away by goalkeeper Olivia McMichael (Glenside, Pa.) and one blocked by Kylie Tierney (Garden City, N.Y.). McMichael made seven saves, while Sara Nidus stopped eight Trinity shots and Kat Mason made a defensive save two and a half minutes into overtime.

After clinching the third seed in the NESCAC, Trinity will host No. 6 Bowdoin College on Saturday, October 29 with 1 p.m. contest.
