HARTFORD, Conn. - The Trinity College Bantams lost, 1-0, to the visiting Amherst College Mammoths in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) women's soccer action on Tuesday night, finishing the regular season with a 6-3-6 overall record and a 4-2-4 mark in the league. Trinity, ranked No. 23 in the nation, just misses out on a chance to host a post-season game for the first time since , and will play at Middlebury College in the NESCAC Championship Quarterfinals on Saturday. No. 10-ranked Amherst finishes its slate at 13-2 overall and 8-2 in the league, clinching the top seed in the tournament.
The Mammoths scored 9:25 into the game when Abby Schwartz outraced Trinity junior goalkeeper Mariana Cournoyer (St. Paul, Minn.) for a high-bouncing ball and headed it past her and into the net. Fiona Birnet had sent the ball into the Trinity zone from the Amherst backfield after a Bantam foul. Trinity recorded its first shot in the 37th minute when junior midfielder Gabby Grattan (Milton, Mass.) got her foot on a corner kick by senior Hannah Storozuk (Tolland, Conn.) but the shot sailed over the cross bar. Storozuk nearly had a one-on-one with Amherst goalie Mike Fisher moments later but was whistled offsides. Cournoyer made four saves in the first half, including the last in the final two minutes to keep the Bantam deficit at one.
Cournoyer was forced to make two more stops in the early part of the second stanza, but Trinity increased its offensive pressure late in the game. Bantam junior Dot Tilden (Hanover, Mass.) had a close shot on goal in the 73rd minute off a Storozuk pass and took another shot in the 83rd minute. Trinity rookie Elena Lindonen (Boxford, Mass.) had a good chance against Fisher with just under three minutes left in the game, but both players fell to the ground as the ball sailed off target. Cournoyer finished with six saves and Fisher had two.
