Volleyball Drops Nail Biter Versus Amherst, 3-1

HARTFORD, Conn. — In a tough fought 3-1 loss, the Trinity College volleyball team's three-win streak snapped on Friday by fierce New England Small College Athletic Conference competitor Amherst (14-25, 26-24, 23-25, 15-25). The Bantams fell to 6-8 on the season and 2-3 in the league, while the Mammoths improved to 9-3 and 5-1.

Eva Lekovic (San Marino, Calif.) led the team with 11 kills and 24 total attacks as teammate Molly Bernstein (Oakland, Calif.) recorded seven kills, 19 total attacks and a pair of solo blocks. First-years Maggie Barnes (Fayetteville, N.C.) and Caroline Howell (Houston, Texas) also tallied solid stats for the Bantams. Barnes notched seven kills and was second on the team with 29 attacks, while Howell recorded 24 assists. Lola Craig (Los Angeles, Calif.) put up a team-leading 31 total attacks and half a dozen kills.

Amherst quickly overwhelmed Trinity in the first set with an eight-point scoring run and fives aces. Isabella Caffuzzi (Brooklyn, N.Y.) recorded a huge block for a late Bantams comeback but the early lead was too much to cut through as Amherst took the first set.

The break between sets was all Trinity needed to get their head back in the game, as they came out firing in the second set with multiple scoring runs by Howell for three and Craig with a pair of serving runs for five total points. Lekovic had two big kills in a row to widen the lead. Amherst fought back, tying the score at 22-22 and again at 24-24. A kill by Caffuzzi and an error by Amherst saw the Bantams tie the match at one apiece.

While the next set was tight (23-25), Amherst doubled down and won the match with a final set of 25-15. The Bantams had four service errors in the final set and couldn't retaliate against Amherst' explosive offense.

Trinity stays home to play Williams at 1 p.m. on Saturday in Oosting Gymnasium.
