Craig's Dozen Kills Not Enough in 3-1 Loss Against Williams

Lola Craig hamd team-leading 12 kills, including five in the first set.

HARTFORD, Conn. — Despite stealing the first set with a five-point advantage, the Trinity College volleyball dropped a 3-1 match against New England Small College Athletic Conference opponent Williams on Saturday (25-20, 15-25, 15-25, 23-25). Lola Craig (Los Angeles, Calif.) dominated in the winning set with five kills and totaled a team-leading dozen spikes on the day. The Bantams moved to 5-9 overall and 2-4 in the league, while the Ephs improved 8-4 and 5-2.

In the opening set, the home team notched 16 kills with a trio by Eva Lekovic (San Marino, Calif.) and Isabella Caffuzzi (Brooklyn, N.Y.), a pair by Ava Boloyan (American Canyon, Calif.) and Molly Bernstein (Oakland, Calif.) and one off the hands of Margaret McCarthy (San Diego, Calif.). With six score ties, the only time Williams held the lead was with the first point of the game with a serving ace by Lauren Kauppila followed by two-straight points for the Bantams for the final lead change. With the score 21-15, attempted a late-set rally for five points brought the Ephs within two before a kill by Craig and a pair of oppositional attack errors sealed the Trinity victory.

Four quick points by Williams set the pace for the second set, while seven visitor points mixed in with only three for the Bantams helped the Ephs pull away for a 11-7 lead.

The fourth set was a nail biter that saw eight tied scores and six lead changes before the narrow 25-23 loss. Williams took a 6-3 to start the set due to a few attack errors by the home team before eight Trinity points out the team up 11-10. The explosive turn of events was aided by two kills by Lekovic and solo spikes by Maggie Barnes (Fayettevile, N.C.), Bernstein and Craig, along with back-to-back opponent attack errors. A six-point serving run by Williams assisted in their eventual win.

Trinity sets out on the road to Bowdoin on October 14 for a 7 p.m. matchup.
