HARTFORD, Conn. — The Trinity College men's soccer team kept the scoreboard clean against New England Small College Athletic Conference foe Bowdoin through the first half before a 10-man Bantam lineup proved too much to cut off the Polar Bears' offense in the second half as the home team fell 1-0 on Saturday. The team dropped to 0-6-3 overall and 0-6-1 in the league, while the visitors improved to 8-1-1 and 2-1-1.
Both teams performed well on the pitch through the first half as Bowdoin had six shots and six fouls and Trinity had a pair of shots and five saves by
Bernardo Simoes (Lisbon, Portugal). Eight minutes into the second half,
Ryan Carey (Auburndale, Mass.) was handed a red card which left Trinity shorthanded for the remainder of the game. Trinity kept the momentum alive with a pair of shots on goal, two corner kicks and forced nine Bowdoin fouls, while not giving up any fouls, facing five shots and a solo save. Trinity remained vigilant and only gave up one foul in the first half.
In the box, Simoes dominated through 87 and a half minutes before Julian Juantorena snuck one into the net off a centering pass by Carlton Steinberg and wiped the goose egg off the scoreboard for Bowdoin. The junior made half a dozen saves before the notching shot.
James Donaldson led the Bantams with four total shots and a pair at target and all but one shot came in the second half.
Michael Traynor (Rye, N.Y.) and
Alex Guglielmo (New Rochelle, N.Y.) each attempted a shot and Traynor pushed past the defenders for a shot on goal but was met by Bowdoin goalkeeper Michael Webber.
The Bantams stay at home for a non-conference contest against Framingham State on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
