Trinity Field Hockey Doubles Up College of New Jersey In NCAA Second Round

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - Sophomore Izzy Deveney (Westport, Conn.) scored the game-winning goal 3:44 into the third quarter to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 2-1 win over The College of New Jersey Lions in the second round of the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championship Tournament at Middlebury College's Kohn Field this afternoon.  Trinity improves to 15-4 and will face the Middlebury College Panthers in the NCAA Quarterfinals tomorrow at 1 p.m. The Lions see their season end at 13-7.

Trinity struck first when junior Jackie Frank (Longmeadow, Mass.) had her shot kicked out by Lion goalie Dani Britton only to have Bantam junior forward Katrina Winfield (Wilmington, Del.) punch in the rebound 5:52 into the game.  Both Britton and Trinity junior goalie Olivia McMichael (Glenside, Pa.) made saves later in the first quarter which ended at 1-0.  McMichael added a pair of stops against TCNJ's Jess Hatch before Sophie Popp tied the game for the Lions on a rebound with 12:35 left before intermission.  McMichael stopped New Jersey's Claire Engebreth on a breakaway late in the second quarter.

Early in the third quarter, Bantam rookie Maeve Hymovitz (Needham Heights, Mass.) inserted a penalty corner to Deveney who lifted the ball over Britton's head and off her pad into the goal. The Trinity offense continued its pressure, forcing Britton to make five saves over the next eight minutes, but the Lions nearly tied it in the final two minutes of the third when McMichael barely denied a blast from Hatch off a Lion penalty corner.  McMichael was stellar in the final quarter, making eight of her 15 saves against a furious Lion offense with the sun glaring in her eyes.  Britton finished with 10 stops for TCNJ.
