HARTFORD, Conn. — A trio of penalty kicks in a shootout sealed the 1-1 tie for the Trinity College women's soccer over the visiting SUNY Geneseo Knights and the Bantams advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championships on Saturday. Trinity improves to 7-4-7 on the season, while Geneseo concluded its season with a 11-4-4 record. Trinity will face Johns Hopkins on the Bantam's home turf at 3 p.m. on Sunday for the second round.
The teams played through a scoreless first half before Lindsay Wright notched the first goal of the game at the 52nd minute to put the visitors up, 1-0. On a foul by the Knights, senior captain
Molly Broderick (Rye, N.Y.) lined up for a penalty kick and knotted the game at one apiece through regulation. The home team had the opportunity to take the lead in the second half when
Hannah Storozuk (Tolland, Conn.) pulled the goalkeeper Angel Bennett from the box but her shot was blocked by Mackenzie Griffin to force the two overtime periods.
Broderick was took the penalty kick after
Elena Lindonen (Boxford, Mass.) drew the foul to keep the Bantams in the game.
"Elena made a great individual effort to drive to the box and she got fouled, it went our way and the refs made the right call,"
Gabby Grattan (Milton, Mass.) noted. "Molly was cool, calm and collected and made the PK so it worked out for us."
"I think if you do anything with confidence and composure you're more likely to succeed and that's kind of been our teams mentality throughout playoffs and that was my mental state going in," Broderick added when asked about her strategy in her game-tying penalty kick.
In the first overtime period, Trinity initiated all the shots and denied the Knights any and held them to playing 10 minutes of defensive. The visitors remained alert with a shot saved by Bennett and a shot by Grattan blocked by Kylie Mann. The second overtime period mirrored the first, except Geneseo's lone attempt to take the lead came off a corner kick by Hannah Sullivan at the 103th minute.
Katelyn Charette (Hampton, N.H.), Lindonen and Grattan aimed for the goal by Bennett was there to make the save and denied the OT victory.
Trinity outshot the Knights 31-5 overall with 18 on target for the Bantams and
Mariana Cournoyer (St. Paul, Minn.) stopping all five of the visitors shots.
The nailbitter of a contest came down to the final kick for Trinity as the Knights made a pair of their penalty kicks and Broderick helped the team remain level-headed going into the shootout, according to Grattan.
"[Molly] said 'go up with confidence, we've been working on PKs in practice and as long as you go up with confidence and power, it'll go in," Grattan said.
The first attempt by the visitors was a bullet but Cournoyer was there to make the grab but the next kick by Geneseo snuck past Cournoyer. Charette was first to shoot a penalty kick for the Bantams and the sophomore's attempt was a success as it passed over the reach of Bennett.
Dot Tilden (Hanover, Mass.) was next up for Trinity but narrowly missed and the Knights' goalie was able to snag the save. Hannah Sullivan drilled the rock next but Cournoyer was able to make the grab followed by a successful kick by Grattan for the 2-1 lead in penalty kicks. Dana Schoeps shot the equalizer in the shootout for the Knights but Griffin couldn't put the ball past Cournoyer for the fifth shot. Dinking off the crossbar, Storozuk had the chance to put Trinity up, but the ball bounced out in front of Bennett who stopped the ball from entering the goal. In the final penalty kick, Broderick capitalized off her second penalty kick of the night and aided Trinity's advancement to the second round.
The Bantams begin their preparation with their game tomorrow with Johns Hopkins who defeated Lesley 6-0 on the Trinity Soccer Field prior to Trinity's matchup.
"I think we played really well today, some of our best soccer we've played so we can continue doing that and what's brought us to this point is being really good defensively as a team." Head Coach
Rachael Schroeder said. "Tomorrow will have to do a good amount of defending at times so if we can do what we did today on offense and our normal defense, we should be good to go."
