Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Men's Ice Hockey Dominates in Home Opener with Tufts, 10-3

HARTFORD, CONN. — A dicey goal by Tufts University in the first minute appeared to be trouble for the Trinity College men's ice hockey team but the Bantams weren't phased by the quick goal in a 10-3 blowout in the first game of the season and home opener on Friday. Trinity kicked off the year 1-0 overall and in the New England Small College Athletic Conference as the Jumbos fell to 0-1 in both.

Max Resnick notched the first goal off the sticks of Chris Thorndson and Sam Miller to put the visitors up early. It wouldn't be another 12 minutes until Trinity broke the shutout Paul Selleck (Laguna Hills, Calif.) scored the first of many goals for the home team. The senior received the puck from fellow Cali teammate Casey Rhodes (Huntington Beach, Calif.) after Eric Sinson (Elm Grove, Wisc.) slide the puck between the legs of the Jumbos defender to set up the game-tying goal. Trinity scored two more times in the opening period by Christian Hayes (Milton, Mass.) and Devan Tongue's (Hampden, Mass.) first goal of the night. First-year Spencer Korona (Enfield, Conn.) and Riley Prattson (Tolland, Mass.) aided in Hayes first-career goal in the Navy and Old Gold, while Ned Blanchard (West Hartford, Conn.) and Richard Boysen (Belle Vernon, Penn.) had a hand in the third goal for the Bantams.

Trinity continued the scoring rampage in the second period with a trio of pucks connecting with the net. Gerard Maretta (Brick, N.J.) notched a goal 44 seconds into the period off the sticks of Jax Murray (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Kyle Tomaso (Newport, R.I.) before John Campomenosi (Wayne, N.J.) took advantage of the shorthanded Jumbos for a powerplay goal off the sticks of Tomaso and Korona and put the home team up, 5-1. The Jumbos attempted to curve the onslaught of Bantam goals by putting in their second line goalie who managed to stop five shots in his five minutes of play before an injury brought in the third goalie of the night. Two more goals by Boysen and Maretta's powerplay goal continued the seven-straight goals by Trinity before Resnick score back-to-back goals in the first minute and a half into the third period both off the pass from Brennan Horn. Goals by Sinson, Murray and Tongue in the final period concluded the explosive 10-3 victory over Tufts.

In the cage, J.P. Mella (Stamford, Conn.) nabbed 20 saves with half of them coming in the final period. With a trio of rotating goalies for the Jumbos, the tenders in the box stopped 21 Bantam pucks, with 13 of them coming in the second period.

The Bantams remain at home with a 4 p.m. match against league foe Connectict College on Saturday.
