HARTFORD, Conn. — Down by two,
Riley Prattson (Toland, Mass.) and
Paul Selleck (Lauguna Hills, Calif.) rallied back for the Trinity College's men ice hockey team in the second period before
Gerard Maretta (Brick, N.J.) notched the game-winning goal off a powerplay in the third in the 5-2 triumph at home with Connecticut College on Saturday. The Bantams remain perfect with a 2-0 record overall and in the New England Small College Athletic Conference, while the Camels are winless at 0-2.
Cole Eichler and Anthony Quatieri recorded a pair of goals in the first to take an early lead for the visitors, 2-0. A swift pass by
Christian Hayes (Milton, Mass.) to Prattson put the Bantams on the board followed by another goal 16 seconds later by Selleck sent across the ice by first-year
Brandon Cimino (New Rochelle, N.Y.). With the score knotted at 2-2 in the final period, Maretta took advantage of the shorthanded Camels off the stick of
John Campomenosi (Wayne, N.J.) who received the puck from the otherside of the blueline by
Jax Murray (Minneapolis, Minn.). Selleck had a stick in another goal as
Eric Sinson (Elm Grove, Wisc.) capitalized 10 minutes later off the faceoff won by Trinity. The Camels switched their strategy and pulled the goalie Kellen Beauton at 18:35 to add an additional skater on the ice, Murray casually slide the puck into the empty net, which brought Beauton back to the cage.
J.P. Mella (Stamford, Conn.) caught 13 Camel pucks in the opening period and remained sharp as he only lost track of a pair. The junior goaltender had a season-high 24 saves through 60 minutes of play. On the defensive side, Trinity remained tight with five blocks with a trio from Cimino. However, the Camels dominated on defense with 10 blocked shots and Beauton stopping 22 shots in his 58:51 minutes in the box. Trinity had three powerplay opportunities but were only successful on the last one thanks to Campomenosi, while Connecticut went 0-for-4 on shorthanded plays.
The Bantams remain at home on Saturday in a non-conference matchup with Albertus Magnus at 2 p.m. in Koppell Community Sports Center.
