HARTFORD, Conn. — With the matchup knotted at three apiece in the third period,
Jax Murray (Minneapolis, Minn.) muscled past Albertus Magnus defenders to net his second goal of the contest for the Trinity College men's ice hockey lead before the Falcons scored the equalizer to force overtime on Saturday. The Bantams moved to 2-1 overall after the 5-4 loss, while the visitors improved to 7-2. Trinity is back in action at home on Sunday at 2 p.m. against non-conference in-state opponent Post University at the Koeppel Community Sports Center.
Murray opened up the high-scoring game after the sophomore skated passed several Falcons and notched his first goal of the night at 4:16 in the first after
Gerard Maretta (Brick, N.J.) setup the goal off the quick pass from
Kyle Tomaso (Milford, Mass.). Murray had a hand in the second Trinity goal 13 minutes later after he tipped the puck to
John Campomenosi (Wayne, N.J.) and put the Bantams up, 2-0.
The Falcons came out of the locker rooms after the opening period with aggressive offense as they fired 10 shots and were able to capitalize on a pair as Alex Gagnon wiped the goose egg off the scoreboard for Albertus Magnus four minutes into the second off a powerplay followed by a game-tying goal by Charles Risk 10 minutes later. The visitors had two close opportunities to net the equalizer prior to Risk's shot when Bradley Farrell stormed across the ice with
Paul Selleck (Laguna Hills, Calif.) keeping pace as the senior forward stole the puck and sent it flying the other way. After a faceoff won by Albertus Magnus, the faceoff winner Coleton Clanci dribbled the puck to the net and fired a bullet at the net, but
J.P. Mella (Stamford, Conn.) was able to quickly shift across the cage to make the close stop and keep Trinity up 2-1. With less than 30 seconds remaining in the second period,
Riley Prattson (Tolland, Conn.) took advantage of the shorthanded Falcons and notched his first powerplay goal of the season of the sticks of
Devan Tongue (Hampden, Mass.) and
Theodore Griffin (Marshfield, Mass.) for the Trinity 3-2 lead.
Gagnon scored his second goal of the night one and a half minutes into the third period to even the score at three each but Trinity retaliated to regained the lead after Murray's goal from Maretta put the home team up, 4-3. The Falcons scored the equalizing goal off the stick of Sam Anderson to force overtime, where Anderson drilled the game-winning goal with 1:44 remaining in OT. The Bantams didn't attempt a shot in the extra period, while the Falcons attempted a trio. Mella caught a season-high 31 saves through 63:15 minutes of play in the Bantams's cage, while Albertus Magnus goalkeeper Logan Bateman made 24.
