Guider and Exnerova's Goals Slide Past Manhattanvile, 2-1

RYE, N.Y. — For the first road win of the season, the Trinity College women's ice hockey team doubles up on Manhattanville College with back-to-back goals in the second period off the sticks of Jenny Guider (Ridgefield, Conn.) and Martina Exnerova (Nelahozeves, Czechia) for the Bantams' 2-1 victory on Tuesday. Trinity improved to 1-2 on the season and served up the Valiants first loss of the season as they dropped to 6-1.

The opening period provided no love for the scoreboard despite the visitors firing a period-high 17 shots across the contest and the home team launching seven. Guider was at the helm of the attempted shots with four, followed by a trio sent by Ethel Wilhelmsson (Stockholm, Sweden).

The Bantams had a powerplay opportunity in the second period but couldn't muster a goal until 34 seconds later when Guider's wide shot was returned by the junior for an unassisted goal to take the 1-0 lead. Off a lost faceoff, Exnerova received a well timed pass by co-captain Claudia Capone (Foxboro, Mass.), who was setup by classmate Erin DeMarco (Westford, Mass.) a little more than seven minutes later.

The home team cut the deficit to one off a powerplay goal and an extra attacker on the ice after the goalie was pulled from the net 11 seconds earlier by Grace Genest off the pass from Lindsay Reyes. Manhattanville had the opportunity to net the game-tying goal 12 times in the remaining two periods but Hannah Leclair (Kensington, Prince Edward Island) made three saves in both the second and third, while Capone, first-year Annabelle Merkel (Chicago, Ill.), Anne Levia (Bancroft, Ontario) and DeMarco each blocked a shot and Stephanie Nevers (West Suffield, Conn.) stopped a pair. As a unit, Trinity blocked seven Manhattanville pucks as the home team denied 16 shots with five knocked away by Gabrielle Cox.

Leclair etched 18 total saves with eight coming in the second period as Franny Gerardi made 43 monstrous saves in the Valiants' box, with 17 in the first period, 11 in the second and 15 in the third. Trinity sent 45 shots with a team-leading eight by Guider, six by Wilhelmsson and Emma Robertson (Halifax, Nova Scotia), five by Exernova and Paige Kehoe (Manasquan, N.J.), followed by four from first-year Jelani Adorno  (Tariffville, Conn.).

Trinity plays its first home contest on November 26 at 7 p.m. against the University of New England at the Koepell Community Sports Center in Hartford, Conn.
