HARTFORD, Conn. — For the first time in the Navy & Gold, first-year goalkeeper
Devon Bobak (Northwood, Ohio) and classmate forward
Nick Royster (Charlotte, N.C.) came through in the Trinity College men's ice hockey team 3-1 triumph over in-state non-conference rival Post University at home in the Koeppel Community Sports Center on Sunday. Bobak secured his first career win in the net as the Bantams improved to 3-2 overall, while the Eagles dropped to 3-7 on the season. Royster thundered across the ice for his first goal as a Bantam halfway through the third period after a smooth pass from senior
Paul Selleck (Laguna Hills, Calif.) to put the home team up, 3-0, before Post's Ryan Cardow snapped the shutout off the pass from Connor Barter 30 seconds later.
The score remained dormant for either team despite Trinity firing 11 shots before the final shot by
Ned Blanchard (West Hartford, Conn.) found a home in the net with nine seconds left in the first period following a narrow pass through the legs of the shorthanded defenders by
Devan Tongue (Hampden, Mass.). Trinity had a pair of close goals prior to the Blanchard's as
Eamon Doheny (Lunenburg, Mass.) blasted one on target to force the Eagles' goalkeeper Drew Blodgett to quickly shift to the left side of the net. Almost three minutes later,
Kyle Tomaso (Milford, Mass.) skated around the net and pulled Blodgett off centered in the net as he launched the puck and was barely tipped by the goalie's glove for a close save.
In similar fashion as the opening period,
Spencer Korona (Enfield, Conn.) capitalized with 21 seconds remaining in the second period as
Gerard Maretta (Brick, N.J.) received the puck from Blanchard before sending it to the first-year and put Trinity up, 2-0. Trinity kept swinging through the second as they attempted 11 shots on goal as Post fired a lone shot on target. Post had Eagle eyes as the team blocked 16 Bantam shots as Niko Grollman had a trio. The home team denied Post significant offensive play with their tight coverage of their opponents, but Trinity blocked three shots will Bobak saved seven total.
The Eagles stepped up their offense in the third period as they recorded four shots on goal and wiped the shutout off the board at 12:51 thanks to Cardow's lone goal. Post had an opportunity to tally a second goal with 20 seconds left on the clock in the final period after Bobak went behind the net to retrieve the puck, but Michael Gethings couldn't knock off a shot before Trinity regrouped and played strong defense.
The Bantams take their first road trip to New England Small College Athletic Conference foe Hamilton on Friday, December 2 with a 7 p.m. matchup.
