HARTFORD, Conn. — A late dunk to close out the second half by first-year
Jarrel Okorougo (Stoneham, Mass.) off the feed from senior captain
Joseph Hoch (Queens, N.Y.) embodied the pace set by the Trinity College's explosive 73-55 victory over the visiting Elms College Blazers in Oosting Gymnasium on Monday. To remain perfect on the season, the Bantams moved to 5-0, while the visitors dropped to 1-5 overall.
Junior captain
Ben Callahan-Gold (New York, N.Y.) netted the first points of the night with a three-pointer on the right side of the arc off a quick pass from classmate
Gilbert Otoo (Burtonsville, Md.) 30 seconds into the opening half off a turnover by Blazers' Jake Midura. A good jumper in the paint by the visiting Tahquell Cadle kept the score close at 3-2 before Trinity took a five point lead off a pair of three's by Callahan-Gold and two free throws by Otoo put the home team up, 11-6.
The tides started to shift as the Blazers took their first lead of the contest ignited by a jumper in the paint by Jaijuan Macklin. Elms College continued to tally points as R.J. Mayfield followed through for a layup and a jumper and Macklin converted a defensive rebound by Cadle into three points on the other side of the court. Macklin notched another pair as the deficit for Trinity continued to grow until
C.J. Redd (Peekskill, N.Y.) shutdown the 11-point run for the Blazers with a three-pointer from Callahan-Gold.
Trinity continued to tack on points as after Okorougo snatched his own rebound off a missed layup and repeated the shot to help the Bantams regain an 18-17 lead. First-year
Andrew Lazarre (West haven, Conn.) put up his first points in the Navy & Gold with a good jumper off the hands of classmate
Henry Vetter (Kenilworth, Ill.). Klaytin Silva cut the defict to three to close out the opening half as both teams entered the locker with the scoreboard at 30-27.
Almost a minute into the second half Callahan-Gold again put up the opening points with a three-pointer with a
Will Dorion (Needham, Mass.) assist to maintain the lead, 33-27. The run continued as the Bantams stacked on 10 more points, while the Blazers only connected for two off a jumper by Macklin two minutes into the half. The home team continued to fire off shots as Hoch converted for a three, a pair of made free throws by first-year
Trevor McDonald (Natick, Mass.) and two more buckets by Okorougo and Redd. The Blazers started to play a little sloppier in the second half with a pair of turnovers for two points and 10 fouls committed including a technical foul which allowed Trinity to pad the lead with eight points, as a pair came off an and one.
The Bantams bench notched 27 points and the team were able to stay alive with 23 second-chance points. Callahan-Gold led the starters with 22 points as he made 50 percent of his field goals and three-point attempts, while going 3-3 at the line. The center added seven rebounds, five assists and a block on the night. Okorougo and Hoch each tallied 10 points as relief. Okorougo also had four rebounds and Hoch grabbed an offensive rebound with his lone assist off the dunk by Okorougo.
Trinity hits the road on Wednesday, as it takes on non-conference opponent Springfield College with a 7 p.m. matchup.
