NEW LONDON, Conn. — An 11-point lead after the first quarter set the stage for the Trinity College women's basketball team's win over the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in nearby New London, Conn. on Wednesday.
Reilly Campbell's (Wallingford, Conn.) team-leading 18 points helped the Bantams improve to 3-1 overall, while the Bears dropped to 1-4 on the season.
A few steals by both teams opened the first quarter before
Hannah Marzo (Shrewbury, Mass.) notched the opening points with a three-point jump shot off a slick pass by
Emma Wax (Pine Brook, N.J.). A layup by Campbell off the hands of
Frankie Silva continued the 5-0 run helped along by a monster block by Marzo prior to the bucket to keep the home team off the board. Coast Guard wouldn't put up any points until 2:10 in the quarter after Jacqueline Ward made a quick layup. Marzo and Campbell added to the lead along with
Indi DelRocco (Branford, Conn.) and first-year
Samantha Slofkiss (Marlboro, N.J.) in the first to bring the Trinity score to 16. A block by
Bria Fuller (Springdale, Md.) and a steal forced by
Tori Varsamis  (Belmont, Mass.) held the Bears to two points before a made free throw and a jumpshot brought the score at the end of the quarter to 16-5.
The Bantams continued to dominate offensively in the second quarter with 13 points, including a made layup by first-year
Theresa Twardosky (Merrimack, N.H.), however, the Coast Guard came out firing as the cut the deficit to within eight with a game-high 16 points, helped along by Kira Wood and Kelly Hagerty. Campbell's pair of defensive rebounds, offensive rebound, blocked shot and five layups highlighted the third quarter along with a defensive rebound and steal by Twardosky, three by Marzo, two from Wax and an offensive rebound followed up with a layup by Slofkiss helped pad the lead by 12.
A step back three-pointer by
Frankie Silva (Auburndal, Mass.) off the pass from Varsamis ignited the hefty pull away from the Bears the concluded the 67-45 blowout capped off by
Lucy Dorion's (Needham, Mass.) three-point jumper with 15 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. Dorion notched her first points in the Navy & Gold a minute and a half earlier in the quarter as the first-year finished the game with five points and a defensive rebound.
Trinity travels to Norwich University to compete in the Ed Hockenbury Classic on December 2 and 3 with the first matchup at 7 p.m. with Westfield State University.
