NORTHFIELD, Vt. — In the first round of the two-day Ed Hockenbury Classic hosted by Norwich University, the Trinity College women's basketball team boasts a 83-67 triumph over Westfield State on Friday. The Bantams improved to 5-1 overall, while the Owls dropped to 5-3. Trinity will play in the championship round against the hosting Cadets at 3 p.m. as Westfield hits the hardwood in the third place round with Eastern Nazarene University with a 1 p.m. matchup.
Trinity exploded in the first quarter with an 18-0 run across the opening five minutes before Olivia Hadia's three-pointer put the Owls on the board. The lofty lead was ignited by back-to-back layups by
Emma Wax (Pine Brook, N.J.) and
Hannah Marzo (Shrewsbury, Mass.) as it was helped along by
Bria Fuller's (Springdale, Md.) six points, two rebounds and steal. Following the first four points by Wax. The Owls regained its footing following Hadia's bucket by rallying back to cut the deficit to within nine off the hands of Hadia and Octaviana Williams who each posted five points.

Tori Varsamis (Belmont, Mass.) opened the first minute of the second quarter and Trinity continued to grow its lead with 23 points before going into the half. Westfield retaliated with a three-pointer by Jess Gardner 30 seconds later followed by a two from Marzo and Williams before two minutes rebounds and turnovers for no points on either side of the court. A personal foul by the Owls broke the scoreless drive as
Lucy Dorion went to the line and put up a pair of free throws with Trinity leading 34-25. Hadia's three-point basket with 2:49 remaining the second quarter followed by a two good free throws by Jordyn Lummus cut the deficit to seven before
Reilly Campbell's (Wallingford, Conn.) layup shut down the attempted rally.
Campbell's good layup off the pass from
Indi DelRocco (Branford, Conn.) posted the first points for Trinity coming out of the half following by a driving layup by the center. Of a defensive rebound by Campbell, led to Fuller's 10th point of the contest off a layup. Wax's back-to-back layups and one by Marzo continued the Trinity's run and bolstered by Campbell's layup from Wax. Maddie Pond shutdown the Bantams 12-0 run with a made layup off her own offensive rebound. Trinity rounded out the third quarter on top with a 72-54 lead and had a quiet fourth quarter for 11 points.
