Trinity Women's Basketball Dropped at Amherst

AMHERST, Mass. – AnLing Vera scored 20 points to lead Amherst College to a 49-42 victory over the visiting Trinity College women's basketball team in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) action on Friday night in Lefrak Gymnasium. The Bantams four-game winning streak comes to an end as they now sit at 15-5 overall with a 5-2 record in the conference while Amherst improves to 18-2 (7-2 NESCAC). Trinity will conclude its 2021-22 regular season tomorrow with a 3 p.m. tip at Hamilton College. Meanwhile, the Mammoths host New Jersey City on Monday.

Neither team led by more than five points until inside of one minute remaining in the fourth quarter when Amherst took a six point lead on a 3-pointer from AnLing. Tori Varsamis started off the final frame of the night with a 3-ball to give the Bantams a four-point advantage. Later trailing by five, sophomore Reilly Campbell came away with a steal and a fastbreak layup to bring the game back to within one possession and Samantha Gallo added a bucket in the paint to cut the deficit to one point with just under five minutes to go. However, Kori Barach quickly responded by drilling a deep shot from behind the arc. Trailing by three, senior tri-captain Elizabeth Althoff blocked an Amherst 3-point attempt and came up with the loose ball but the Bantams were unable to capitalize on the turnover to which AnLing buried a clutch shot to give the home squad the largest lead of the night.

First-year Hannah Marzo led Trinity with nine points and an impressive career-high six steals. Gallo and Varsamis each tallied eight points while senior tri-captain Bailey Hyland led the visitors with seven rebounds. Collectively, Trinity shot just 29.2% from the field while Amherst shot 30.5%.
