Trinity Baseball Outslugged By Springfield

HARTFORD, Conn. - Sophomore C Ryan Sorgi (Braintree, Mass.) went 3-for-6 with two runs, two doubles, and five RBIs to lead the visiting Springfield College Pride to a 23-12 victory over the Trinity College Bantams in baseball action this afternoon on Murren Family Field at DiBenedetto Stadium.  Trinity, playing in its first game back in New England after spending last week in Florida, falls to 6-5 despite reaching double-digit runs for the third game in a row.  The Pride improves to 7-10 with its third straight victory.  Trinity opens New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) East Division play this weekend with a three-game series at home against Bates College.  Springfield hosts Dean tomorrow at 4 p.m.

Springfield scored four runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back, pounding 23 hits and scoring in seven different frames.  The Bantams cut the Pride's early lead in half with two runs in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI double by senior OF Colin Mann (Dedham, Mass.) and a sacrifice fly by junior C Jake Miller (Marblehead, Mass.).  Springfield erupted for eight more runs in the top of the third, including two on a two-run double by Sorgi who had two hits in the inning, but the Bantams answered again with six runs in the bottom of the third to make the score, 12-8, one third of the way through the contest.  Trinity scored on an RBI single by sophomore 1B Sean Meth (Sands Point, N.Y.) two bases-loaded walks, a Pride error, and a sacrifice fly by junior CF Brandon Chow (Greenwich, Conn.).  The Pride scored 10 runs over the next four runs to build up its lead, while three Springfield pitchers kept the Bantams off the board with just one hit allowed over the final nine outs.

Trinity junior 2B Patrick Dillon (Bronx, N.Y.) finished 3-for-5 at the plate with two runs and two doubles, while sophomore SS Jack Mathews (Westport, Conn.), Meth, and first-year 3B Tanner Fairchild (Sarasota, Fla.) added two hits apiece.  Senior tri-captain RHP Justin Olson (Avon, Conn.) was the most effective of nine Trinity hurlers with two hits and no runs allowed and two strikeouts over 1.2 innings early in the game.  Jack DeGirolamo improved to 2-0 for Springfield with five outs of scoreless work in relief. Senior Jack Simonetty was 5-for-7 with two runs and three RBIs for the Pride.
