Trinity Men's Ice Hockey Wins NESCAC Title

The Bantams defeated Colby College, 4-1 for their sixth conference title

WATERVILLE, Main – Sophomore Gerard Maretta (Brick, N.J.) scored two goals to lead the Trinity College men's ice hockey team to a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) title. The Bantams defeated Colby College, 4-1 on Sunday afternoon at Jack Kelley Rink in the conference final to earn its sixth NESCAC Championship in program history. Trinity, who now receives an automatic bid into the NCAA DIII Tournament, is 17-7-1 this season while Colby College closes out the year with a 17-6-2 mark.

Maretta put the game's first tally on the board at the 3:31 mark in the first period. The sophomore forward shook a Colby defenseman as he entered the zone, dropping him to the ice before firing a shot into the back of the net from the right side circle. Maretta continued to shine in the attack zone netting his second goal of the game just 13 seconds into the start of the second period, this time intercepting a Colby pass before once again shooting from the right circle for the score.

The third period opened up much like the second, as the Bantams capitalized on a power play and sophomore Jax Murray (Minneapolis, Minn.) gave Trinity a comfortable 3-0 lead 33 seconds in. He was assisted by classmates Kyle Tomaso (Newport, RI.) and Maretta. Colby got on the board at the 16:37 mark in the third period, thanks to Jack Sullivan who riffled a shot top-shelf for the score, assisted by Max O'Brien. Less than two minutes later, senior Connor Sundquist (South Glastonbury, Conn.) tapped in an empty net insurance goal to put an exclamation mark on a Trinity College NESCAC Title.

Sophomore J.P. Mella recorded 30 saves in net for the visitors and let up just one goal throughout the entirety of the NESCAC tournament while Andy Beran made 28 stops for the Mules on the day.
