Trinity Baseball Suffers Late Inning Loss To Wheaton

HARTFORD, Conn. - Trinity College first-year LHP Jonathan Link (Holmes, N.Y.) tossed 6.2 innings of scoreless ball, allowing four hits and striking out three, in his first career start, but the visiting Wheaton College Lyons scored three runs in the ninth inning to steal a 3-1 victory against the Bantams in baseball action this afternoon on Murren Family Field at DiBenedetto Stadium.  Trinity sees its season record fall to even at 14-14, while the Lyons improve to 21-10 with their eighth victory in a row.  Trinity visits MIT next on Wednesday at 4 p.m. The Lyons host Coast Guard Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.

Link did not allow a runner past first base through six innings, while Wheaton starter Liam Goldthwaite was nearly as good with just three hits and a single run allowed, three K's and no walks over seven innings.  Trinity senior OF Colin Mann (Dedham, Mass.) singled and scored on a two-out hit by sophomore Andrew Tuozzolo (Pittstown, N.J.) in the second inning for the lone Bantam run.  Link left the game with two runners on base in the seventh inning, as Bantam senior reliever William Simeone (Milton, Mass.) came in and ended the threat with a strikeout.

Simeone was just as effective for the next five outs, including three strikeouts, but Wheaton's Cavan Brady walked with two outs in the top of the ninth, stole a base, and scored the game-tying run on a single up the middle by junior Nick Croteau.  Lyon rookie Anthony Tiberio delivered a pinch-hit double to bring home the go-ahead run and an insurance run.  Dom Cunha pitched a perfect ninth to save the game for fellow Wheaton reliever Max Pierce.  Meth had the third Trinity hit with a double and Croteau was the lone player in the game with two hits.  Neither team made an error.
