HARTFORD, Conn. – Senior
Christine Taylor (Westport, Conn.) and junior
Lily Ives (Chappaqua, N.Y.) each scored six goals to lead the Trinity College women's lacrosse team to a 16-14 win over Bowdoin College in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) action on Saturday at Robin L. Sheppard Field. The Bantams improve to 7-3 with a 4-2 mark in the conference as the Polar Bears fall to 8-4 (3-4 NESCAC). Trinity resumes action on Wednesday with a 6 p.m. start time at Wesleyan University.
The Bantams took a 4-0 lead in the first quarter before Bowdoin responded with its first goal of the game on a woman-up advantage at the 8:30 mark in the first quarter. Taylor then added the Bantam's fifth goal of the game to extended the lead to 5-1 before the first period break. Trinity opened up the second quarter much like the first, netting three-straight goals to extended its lead to 8-1 with Ives and sophomore
Casey Ward (Norwell, Mass.) scoring goals less than 20 seconds apart and sophomore
Caitlyn Buermann (West Caldwell, N.J.) netting her fourth of the season, 8:21 into the second period.
The Polar Bears then managed to score four-straight goals to cut the deficit to 8-5 with just over three minutes before the halftime break. Sophia Sudano scored twice during Bowdoin's four-goal surge. In the third quarter, Trinity again regained control of the game with another four-goal run to take a 15-8 advantage but Bowdoin once again answered, going on a five-goal scoring barrage in the fourth quarter and nearly stealing the game away from the Bantams making it 15-13 with three minutes left in regulation. Taylor tallied her sixth goal of the game and gave Trinity a three goal lead with 22 seconds left.
Sudano led Bowdoin with four goals and two assists while Annabelle Gersch tallied three scorers and one helper as well.
Anna Costello registered three caused turnovers for Trinity while
Lilianna Khosrowshahi (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.),
Samantha Booma (Marblehead, Mass.), Buermann and Ward each recorded one goal. Senior
Gabriella Young (Raleigh, N.C.) played all 60 minutes in net with eight saves. Three Bowdoin goalkeepers combined for 11 saves for the visitors.
