Trinity Men's Soccer Ties On The Road Against Western New England

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Sophomore forward Rasheed Sarieh (Nashville, Tenn.) scored in the 80th minute to lead the visiting Trinity College Bantams to a 1-1 stalemate against the Western New England University Golden Bears in men's soccer action this afternoon on Suprenant Field.  Trinity moves to 0-3-3 with its third 1-1 tie of the year heading into a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) road contest at Bates College on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.  The Golden Bears are now 4-3-1.

The game started slowly as the teams sent the ball back and forth over the midfield line. Western New England provided the majority of the offensive pressure in the first half, before Trinity senior Alex Guglielmo and junior Evans Djohan (South Grafton, Mass.) forced WNE keeper Roger Leland to make two late saves shortly before intermission.  Bantam sophomore Jacob Loor (Hosuton, Texas) had two decent looks shortly before intermission, but the Golden Bear defense knocked both away.

In the second stanza, Trinity junior Dante Merlin (South Windsor, Conn.) was taken down and the Bantams were awarded a penalty kick.  Junior Michael Traynor (Rye, N.Y.) took the attempt, but Leland guessed right and the game remained scoreless.  Bantam junior goalkeeper Bernardo Simoes (Lisbon, Portugal) came up with three saves midway through the second half and the pressure eased up on both sides until Sarieh received a throw-in from rookie Ryan Carey (Auburndale, Mass.) on the right side of the box and then sent a left-footed shot past Leland to give Trinity a 1-0 lead.

Simoes made two more stops in the final 10 minutes, but Leland came all the way up from his goalie position to head in the game-tying marker in the 88th minute off a corner kick by teammate Shay O'Neill.  Western New England finished with a 19-to-13 shooting edge, while Simoes finished with six saves to three for Leland.
