HARTFORD, Conn. — With the score knotted at two and five minutes remaining on the clock in the third period,
Gerard Maretta (Brick, N.J.) netted the eventual game-winning goal off the sticks of
Paul Selleck (Laguna Hills, Calif.) and
Kyle Tomaso (Newport, R.I.) for a 3-2 triumph for the Trinity College men's ice hockey team over the visiting Colby College Mules on Friday. The Bantams extended their win streak to four to move to 8-5 overall and three-straight New England Small College Athletic Conference wins for a 5-2 record, while the visitors fell to 7-6 and 5-3. Trinity remains on its home ice on Saturday for a league matchup against Bowdoin College at 4 p.m.
Tomaso connected for the first goal of the night in the opening stanza with passes from
Casey Rhodes (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and
Riley Prattson (Tolland, Conn.) at 13:39 followed by a goal in the second period despite being short-handed by Selleck with help from
Richard Boysen (Belle Vernon, Penn.) to put Trinity up, 2-0. In the first two periods, the Navy & Gold fired 38 shots, with 24 on goal towards Mules' goalkeeper Andy Beran and 14 shots on target in the second. In the cage for Trinity,
Devon Bobak (Northwood, Ohio) had a tame evening with seven shot in the first two periods along with five wide and eight blocked by Bantams.
Forty-nine seconds into the third period, Carter Breitenfeldt cleared the goose egg off the board for Colby, followed by the game-tying goal by Ryan Doolin almost three and a half minutes later. Boysen and
John Campomenosi (Wayne, N.J.) each blocked a shot, while Bobak saved a trio that had the potential to put the visitors up before Maretta's game-winning goal. The Mules had three chances to tie it again, but one went wide, one was denied by Campomenosi and one found the goalie's glove.
