Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Trinity Men's Ice Hockey Downs Bowdoin

HARTFORD, Conn. - Junior defenseman Theodore Griffin (Marshfield, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal that broke a 2-2 tie in the third period and added an assist to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 5-2 victory over the visiting Bowdoin College Polar Bears in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men's ice hockey action this afternoon at Williams Rink in the Koeppel Community Sports Center.  Trinity wins its fourth game in a row and improves to 9-5 overall and 6-2 in the NESCAC, while Bowdoin drops to 8-4-1 overall and 4-4-1 in the league with its third consecutive setback.  Trinity will visit NESCAC rival Tufts in its next game on Friday at 7 p.m.

Trinity took a 1-0 lead when Griffin fed rookie forward Spencer Korona (Enfield, Conn.) for a goal 4:46 into the game and added a goal by junior forward Gerard Maretta (Brick, N.J.) 2:40 into the second period.  Bowdoin's Jimmy Duffy scored twice in a row on helpers by Albert Washco to it.  The first came 4:29 into the middle frame and the second was 4:56 after the final break.  The Polar Bears nearly tied the contest late in the second period, but Trinity first-year goaltender Devin Bobak (Northwood, Ohio) stopped two Bowdoin shots during a flurry in the final minute.

Bobak made two more saves despite Bowdoin playing short-handed midway through the third period, including one on a Duffy shot during breakaway.  Moments later, Griffin blasted the clincher from above the left face-off circle just under the pipe over Bowdoin goalie Alex Kozic's left shoulder with 8:23 remaining in the contest.  Christian Hates assisted on the play.  The Polar Bears pulled Kozic with during a late power play and the Bantams made them pay when senior Paul Selleck (Laguna Hills, Calif.) got behind the visitors' defense and flicked the puck into an empty net with :56 left.  Bantam senior defenseman Andrew Troy (Ithaca, N.Y.) added another empty-netter as time expired.  Bobak finished with 28 saves and Kozic had 37 stops.
