Well Fought Fourth Quarter Seals Women's Basketball Win Over Camels, 56-51

The Bantams put up 21 points in the closing quarter.

HARTFORD, Conn. — With 21 points in the fourth quarter, the Trinity College women's basketball delivered a well-deserved victory, 56-51, over a strong Connecticut College team in Oosting Gymnasium on Friday. The Bantams improved to 14-1 overall and remained undefeated in the New England Small College Athletic Conference with a 3-0 record, while the Camels dropped to 4-10 and 0-3. Trinity stays on their home hardwood for a Monday matchup against Roger Williams University at 1 p.m. on January 15.

The two teams went neck-in-neck throughout the contest with five lead changes on either side of the ball; Trinity's largest lead was by nine points in the second and fourth quarters, while the Camels held their largest lead in the third with a four-point advantage. The third quarter saw eight of the ten lead changes as the scored was knotted a dozen times, with eight also in the third stanza.

Jaycie Rojik had a well-timed layup and notched the first points of the game to put the visitors up by two before Bria Fuller (Springdale, Md.) sent a jumper through the air off the hands of Frankie Silva (Auburndale, Mass.) to tie the game. Trinity never lost the lead in the opening quarter after the bucket from Fuller with an 8-4 run with five free throws and a three-pointer by Silva. Steals by Emma Wax (Pine Brook, N.J.) and Reilly Campbell (Wallingford, Conn.) aided in the low scoring opportunities for the visitors.

A jumper by Samantha Slofkiss (Marlboro, N.J.) off her own offensive rebound halfway through the second period padded the largest lead of the night so far with the assist by Silva as Trinity lead by nine. A trio of consecutive three-pointers by the opposition closed the gap to within four, with the Navy & Gold up 21-14 before the half. Trinity and Connecticut College each put up 11 points, with three coming off the fingertips of Campbell. Trinity stayed aggressive on the floor with three second-chance point opportunities and two points off a turnover, with Wax navigating to the basket off the forced out of bounds.

Twenty seconds into the third quarter, Fuller went airborne for a clean jumper in the paint over the head of her defender to gro the Bantams lead by six and Campbell connected with the net a minute later, but back-to-back jumpers in the paint by Rojik quickly followed both Bantam buckets. With four minutes remaining in the third, Rojik went to the line and made both baskets to knot the game at 25 apiece. Lucy Dorion (Needham, Mass.) pulled up for an easy two-pointer after losing her defender but a three-pointer by Avery Burns snatched the lead back for the Camels for the first time since the opening bucket. Trinity kept it close with a pair of made free throws by Slofkiss to put the home team up by one, but another Avery three-pointer shifted the lead back to Connecticut College, 31-29. Rojik record a layup in the paint for the highest Camels' lead of the contest, but a free throw by Indi DelRocco (Branford, Conn.), a three-pointer by Silva knotted and a jumper by Fuller put Trinity up, 35-33. However, with 29 seconds remaining a pair of free throws by Rebec Oberman-Levine knotted the game at 35 apiece going into the fourth.

A layup in the paint by Campbell with an assist by DelRocco sealed the win for Trinity as the Bantams never lost the advantage, despite Molly Cronin tying the game up at 37, Fuller denied the Camels to jump ahead with a jumper in the paint off the pass from Silva. The deciding factor in the victory was the 10 free throws made by Trinity to hold onto the lead, along with four steals as Campbell and Fuller stole one each and DelRocco kidnaped a pair.
