Nevers OT Goal Lands Women's Ice Hockey in Win Column Over Camels, 1-0

At 1:14 into the overtime with Connecticut College, Stephanie Nevers notched the game-winning goal with help from Paige Kehoe.

HARTFORD, Conn. — Through three periods, the Trinity College women's ice hockey team and the visiting New England Small College Athletic Conference rival Connecticut College remained deadlocked at 0-0 before Stephanie Nevers (West Suffield, Conn.) netted the game-winner goal at 1:14 in overtime on Friday. Trinity improved to 7-7 overall and recorded its first league win to move 1-6, while the Camels dropped to 8-5 and 5-4. The two teams face-off again in Koeppel Community Sports Center on Saturday with a 4 p.m. puck drop.

Nevers sent one flying wide in extra time, but Paige Kehoe (Manasquan, N.J.) was there to extend the play for the Bantams as the sophomore passed it back to Nevers who connected with the net for the game-winning goal. Prior to the goal, Claudia Capone (Foxboro, Mass.) fired a quick shot 21 seconds into overtime but Abby Wieczorek stopped the puck and 14 seconds later Melanie Conca tried to end OT but couldn't muster up the goal.

The Bantams had five powerplay opportunities, but Connecticut denied the home team any chance to take the lead on seven total shots. The visitors only had a pair of powerplay chances, with two shots in the first opportunity and none in the second. In the cage, Hannah Leclair (Kensington, Prince Edward Island) stood tall for Trinity with 28 saves, with 15 fired at her in the final period on regulation. On the other side of the ice, Wieczorek stopped 24 pucks as the Bantams let off 10 in the second period. Both teams stayed strong on defense as the Camels blocked 15 Bantam shots and Trinity denied six, with a pair stopped by Ethel Wilhelmsson (Stockholm, Sweden).

Kehoe had the opportunity to put the Bantams up in the first period with a tight shot on goal that narrowly doinked off the pipe before the buzzer 26 seconds later. Seven and a half minutes into the second stanza, Alana Burm hit the Trinity pipe with a shot that could have put the Camels on the board, while teammate Kate Hagness also had a good shot on goal, but the puck kissed the pipe before Leclair put her glove on it.
