HARTFORD, Conn. — In the second game of a two-day series, the Trinity College women's ice hockey sweeps the visiting Connecticut College Camels off the coattails of first-year
Annabelle Merkel 's (Chicago, Ill.) overtime goal for a 3-2 triumph on the team's home ice in the Koeppel Community Sports Center on Saturday. Trinity improved to 8-7 overall and 2-6 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference, while the visitors fell to 8-6 and 5-5. The Bantams set off on a two-day road trip at league opponent Colby College with the first game at 7 p.m. on January 27.
Jenny Guider (Ridgefield, Conn.) only allowed 1:23 to elapse on the clock in the opening period before the junior netted her first goal of the night off the stick of
Paige Kehoe (Manasquan, N.J.). A minute and 20 seconds later, Rylie Griffith took advantage of the shorthanded Bantams to knot the score at one a piece before Guider notched her second of the period off the quick passes from
Jelani Adorno (Tariffville, Conn.) and
Erin DeMarco (Westford, Mass.). Griffith yet again utilized the chance to even the game against a shorthanded Trinity squad with a quick goal in the third period with 1:03 on the clock and forced extra time. Almost halfway through overtime, the rookie Bantam trio worked well as a unit to allow Merkel to score the game-winning goal of the assists from first-years
Lillian Cassidy (Aspen, Colo.) and
Emma Robertson (Halifax, Nova Scotia).
In the cage for Trinity,
Hannah Leclair (Kensington, Prince Edward Island) caught 32 Camel pucks with 12 in the scoreless second period, while Abby Wieczorek stopped 28 with eight in the second stanza. Each team had six powerplay opportunities but only th Camels capitalized against the shorthanded Bantams. The visitors stayed vigilant on defense against a strong Trinity team with 16 blocked shots, while the home team stopped eight DeMarco and Adorno both with a pair.
Within the first 44 seconds, Connecticut had two close shots to end the overtime by Leclair put a glove on both and the goaltender saved two more in extra time to keep the Bantams alive.
