HARTFORD, Conn. – After only leading the Hamilton College Continentals by two points in the first half, the Trinity College women's basketball team outscored the visiting New England Small College Athletic Conference rival 28-12 in the second half for the 55-37 victory at home on Friday. The Bantams improved to 18-1 on the season and a perfect 5-0 in the league, while Hamilton dropped to 10-8 and 3-3. Trinity remains at home in another conference matchup tomorrow against Amherst College with a 3 p.m. tip.
Frankie Silva (Auburndale, Mass.) pulled up for a three-pointer 30 seconds into the first quarter off the defensive rebound by
Reilly Campbell (Wallingford, Conn.) and helped along with an assist by
Emma Wax (Pine Brook, N.J.). Twenty seconds later, Wax sent the rock to Campbell who drove to the basket for a layup in the paint and put Trinity up, 5-0. The Bantam run continued as
Hannah Marzo (Shrewsbury, Mass.) went to the line for a pair of good free throws after
Bria Fuller (Springdale, Md.) stole the ball, followed by a jumper in the paint by Campbell off the pass from Silva.
With four minutes remaining in the first quarter, the Continentals netted their first bucket of the night off an unassisted jumper by Taylor Lambo, which was quickly followed by a jumper in the paint by Campbell. The visitors started to heat up with eight more points in the stanza capped off by a three-pointer by Althea Hill off her own defensive rebound and off the hands of Emily Hall with 51 seconds left on the clock. Hamilton's fire kept burning to start the second quarter with five straight points off a jumper by Olivia Davis and a trio of successful baskets on the line. Back-to-back jumpers by Fuller grew the lead by eight before an 8-2 run by Hamilton brought the score within two before the final buzzer.
Nine seconds into the third quarter, Marzo sliced the ball to Campbell as the junior went airborne for a jumper in the paint to extend Trinity's lead, 29-25. With four and a half minutes remaining, Hall pulled up for a good jumper to shorten the gap to within one, but Wax grabbed her own rebound and connected for a layup to keep the Bantam lead. Theresa Twardosky (Merrimack, N.H.)swished a clean three-pointer off the tips of
Samantha Slofkiss (Marlboro, N.J.), followed by two jumpers from Wax and
Indi DelRocco (Branford, Conn.) to close out the third, 40-31. Trinity went on a 10-3 run in the opening seven minutes of the fourth quarter followed by another Twardosky three-pointer deep behind the arc off the assist from Wax for the home team's highest lead of the contest, 19.
Hamilton only netted 12 points in the entire second half, while the Bantams took a strong lead with 28 total. Through four quarters, the Bantams never lost the lead after Silva's opening three-point bucket to open the game. In the third, Trinity had seven second-chance points and seven points off turnovers. Campbell recorded a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds, along with a pair of blocks, while Wax netted 10 with four assists, two rebounds and a steal.
