HARTFORD, Conn. - Junior center
Reilly Campbell (Wallingford, Conn.) had 15 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 51-45 victory over the visiting Amherst College Mammoths in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) women's basketball action this afternoon on Ogrodnik Court in Oosting Gymnasium. Trinity, ranked No. 15 in the nation, improves a best-ever 19-1 overall and 6-0 in the NESCAC with its 16th win in a row and its first over Amherst since 2006-07. The Mammoths fall to 14-7 overall and 2-5 in the league and see their 18-game winning streak over the Bantams come to an end.
Trinity led wire-to-wire, beginning with a drive by junior
Emma Wax (Pine Brook, N.J.) 1:20 into the game. Points were hard to come by early, but the Bantams closed the first quarter with an old-fashioned three-point play by senior
Bria Fuller (Springdale, Md.) and two free throws by rookie guard
Theresa Twardosky (Merrimack, N.H.) to lead, 12-6. Trinity maintained its lead in the second quarter and led, 22-15, at the break thanks to seven points apiece by Wax and Reilly.
Trinity led by double digits, 28-17, four minutes into the third quarter on a Fuller jumper, but Amherst rallied and closed the gap to 37-33 at the final break on a layup as time expired by Reelya Patel. Alex Stuart scored for the Mammoths early in the fourth quarter to make it a 2-point game, but Trinity sophomore guard Indi DelRocci (Branford, Conn.) answered with a three-pointer from the right corner moments later. Stuart cut the Amherst deficit to one points at 42-41 on a drive with 4:54 on the clock, but Trinity again responded as Wax made a jumper and classmate
Tori Varsamis (Belmont, Mass.) made a steal and scored on a layup to increase the Bantam advantage back up to five. The teams traded baskets and then the Trinity defense held Amherst to just four missed three-pointers until the final second.
Trinity outrebounded Amherst, 37-32, and the teams made just two three-pointers each, but the Bantams won the game at the foul line with 17 free throws in 21 attempts. Wax joined Campbell in double figures in scoring for Trinity with 10 points, while Fuller and DelRocco finished with nine points each, and senior forward
Frankie Silva (Auburndale, Mass.) grabbed six rebounds. Patel had 15 points and seven rebounds, and Kori Barach totaled 14 points, six rebounds, and six assists for the Mammoths.
