DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The Trinity College Men's Basketball team downed the University of Saint Joseph's, 70-58, during the second day of the LaFrance Hospitality Tournament, hosted by UMass-Dartmouth at the Tripp Athletic Center Saturday afternoon. The Bantams improve to 5-0 on the season, while the Blue Jays dip to 4-1 overall.
After giving up the opening bucket, the Bantams rattled off a 13-0 run over the next six minutes, powered by eight points from senior Ben Callahan-Gold. The Blue Jays battled back with a 17-6 run in a ten-minute span to even the score at 19-19. The sides traded the lead back-and-forth from the foul line over the final minutes of the half, with the score sitting at 25-25 at the break.
Play remained tight to open the second half with no more than two points separating the teams over the first five minutes. Knotted at 34-34 with 12:57 to play, the Bantams began to pull away with a 14-4 run spanning five minutes, fueled by ten points from sophomore Henry Vetter, to build a 48-38 lead. With 2:56 to play, Vetter knocked down a jumper to hand Trinity their largest lead of the game, 62-43. The Bantams held off a late 15-8 run from the Blue Jays to lock up the 70-58 win.
The Bantams registered a trio of double-digit scorers, led by a game-high 23 points, five rebounds and two assists from Vetter. Callahan-Gold netted 20 points, shooting 7-of-12 from the floor and 6-of-9 from three-point, with five rebounds. Graduate Dana Smith added 10 points, five rebounds and three assists in the win.
Trinity edged the Blue Jays in the rebounding column, 39-35, while Saint Joseph's controlled points in the paint 34-18. The Bantams connected on 19-of-48 (39.6%) from the field, 7-of-19 from three-point range (36.8%), and 25-of-32 (78.1%) from the foul line. The Blue Jays shot 24-of-55 (43.6%) from the floor, 5-of-16 (31.3%) from three-point and 5-of-10 (50%) from the free throw stripe.
Trinity will look to keep their win streak alive when they travel to Elms College for a non-conference game Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
