Women's Hockey Dominates Albertus Magnus, 6-0

HARTFORD, Conn. – The Trinity College Women's Hockey squad blanked visiting Albertus Magnus College, 6-0, in a non-conference game at the Koeppel Community Sports Center Sunday evening. With the win, the Bantams improve to 3-2 on the season, while the Falcons drop to 0-9-1 overall.

After eight minutes of scoreless play, the Bantams dented the scoreboard as sophomore Annabelle Merkel swung a pass to the point, where junior Jelani Adorno fired a shot that was stopped by trickled past Falcons first year goaltender Christmas Johnson to hand Trinity the 1-0 lead.

The Bantams added to their advantage on the opening faceoff of the second period as first year Marta Mazzocchi won the draw and raced to the Falcons net, where she placed a shot over Johnson's stick-side shoulder to extend the Trinity lead to 2-0 with 19:49 remaining in the second period.

During a power play with 2:30 left in the second period, Trinity juniors Paige Kehoe and Annika Dyczkowski moved the puck back-and-forth in the Falcons zone, until Kehoe found Adorno at the top of the point, who ripped a shot past Johnson glove-side, pushing the Bantams lead to 3-0.

Less than a minute later, Trinity struck again as senior Anne Levia shot the puck into a crowd from the point, where classmate Corinne Bolding redirected the shot past Johnson, padding the Bantams lead to 4-0.

In the opening minute of the third period, Trinity sophomore Lillian Cassidy grabbed a loose puck in the Falcons zone, drove to the net and wristed a shot that bounced off Johnson's shoulder and flipped over her head and into the net, giving the Bantams the 5-0 lead.

The Bantams delivered their final blow with 10:16 to play in the period as senior Jenny Guider took a pass from first year Lily Brook and sniped a shot past Johnson to send Trinity to the 6-0 victory.

"[Albertus] is a first-year program, so this was a game I expected us to dominate," said Trinity Head Coach Keith Maurice. "We had some bad habits early on, but we worked hard to get to our normal play and pace. It good to get some different goal scorers today, which shows our depth. It's nice to string together three wins in a row. We'll focus on keeping our momentum together heading into Hamilton. They're a top ranked team, and any time you play a NESACAC game, it's going to be a battle. I think just doing the little things in practice and realizing this is where we need to score goals, and hopefully that will continue into the weekend."

The Bantams dominated the shot column, 52-4, and the faceoff battle, 36-21, during the game. Trinity first year Maddie Carter registered her first career win with a shutout and four saves in her collegiate debut. Johnson stopped a game-high 46 shots for the Falcons in the loss.

The Bantams look to maintain their winning ways with a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) road trip to Hamilton College for game one of a two-game series Friday night. Puck drops at 7:00 p.m.
