Boysen Nets Two Goals As Men's Hockey Downs Hamilton, 4-1

HARTFORD, Conn. – The Trinity College Men's Hockey team defeated visiting Hamilton College, 4-1, in a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) clash at Koeppel Community Sports Center Friday night. The Bantams improve at 5-1 on the season and 3-0 in the NESCAC, while the Continentals drop to 1-1 in conference and 4-1 overall.

With seven minutes remaining in the first period, the Bantams cracked the scoreboard as first year James Barbour gathered a loose puck in front of a crowded Hamilton crease and fired a shot through traffic to the back of the net, staking Trinity to a 1-0 lead.

Leading 1-0 in the second period, the Bantams padded their advantage on a power play as senior Devan Tongue chased a puck to the boards behind the Hamilton net and drop a pass back to junior Richard Boysen, who wristed a shot over Hamilton junior goalie Charlie Archer, making it 2-0 with 11:04 on the clock.

The Continentals cut into the deficit four minutes later as sophomore Max Bulawka tucked a rebounded shot past Trinity sophomore goalie Devon Bobak to set the score at 2-1.

With 5:16 left to play in the second period, the Bantams rebuilt a two-goal advantage as Tongue played a pass through center ice to a charging Boysen, who lifted a shot past Archer, putting Trinity ahead 3-1 after two periods. Senior Gerrard Maretta added an empty net tally in the final minutes to send the Bantams to the 4-1 victory.

"I was really proud of the guys and I thought it was a really complete effort," said Trinity Head Coach Matthew Greason. "We had a couple hiccups with the penalties…but it was a pretty good effort top to bottom. We did a good job in their transition and tried to make their defense work below the goal line, and I think we did that pretty well. When Devon [Bobak] was asked to do something, he was great. It's been a long time since we beat Hamilton...and the beauty of it now is we face an Amherst team who's going to be hungry as anything and we'll need to respond again."

The Bantams outshot the Continentals, 38-23, while Hamilton edged Trinity in the faceoff circle, 28-25. Bobak posted 22 saves in the win, while Archer logged a game-high 34 saves for the Continentals.

The Bantams will be back on the ice Saturday afternoon for a NESCAC battle with Amherst at the Koeppel Community Sports Center. Puck drops at 4:00 p.m.
