BOSTON, Mass. – The 13th-ranked Trinity College Women's Basketball team led nearly the entire game during a 60-44 victory over host Emmanuel College in a non-conference tilt at the Jean Yawkey Center Tuesday night. The Bantams rise to 6-2 overall, while the Saints drop to 3-5 on the season.
After surrendering the opening basket of the game, the Bantams rattled off 18 unanswered points, paced by three-pointers from junior Hannah Marzo, sophomore Theresa Twardosky and junior Indi DelRocco, to help the Bantams to a 18-4 advantage after the opening quarter of play.
The Bantams outscored the Saints, 9-2, over the first five minutes of the second quarter. Sophomore Samantha Slofkiss knocked down a pair of free throws at the 1:52 mark to hand Trinity their largest lead of the game, 33-11. The Bantams held a 33-13 edge heading into halftime.
The Saints held the Bantams to nine points in the third quarter as they chipped away at the deficit. Following a jumper from senior Bria Fuller at the 2:59 mark to put the Bantams ahead 42-22, but a pair of late buckets from Emmanuel trim the Trinity lead to 42-27 after three quarters.
Trinity doubled up Emmanuel with an 8-4 run behind five points from senior Emma Wax to regain a 50-31 lead with 6:35 to play. The Saints responded with a late 7-2 run to close the gap to 52-38, but Trinity halted the effort with an 8-0 run behind three points from Slofkiss and first year Olivia Vick en route to the 60-44 victory.
Wax led the Bantams offensively with a game-high 13 points, seven rebounds and a game-high five assists. Vick netted 10 points off the bench, while Twardosky, Slofkiss, DelRocco each tallied seven points in the win. Senior Reilly Campbell grabbed a team-high eight rebounds in the win.
Olivia Matela scored 13 points for Emmanuel. Kaitlyn Bartash added seven points and six rebounds, while Desiree Robinson recorded six points and seven rebounds.
The Bantams edged the Saints on the glass, 42-38, in points in the paint, 22-18, and bench points, 26-20, during the contest. Trinity connected on 22-of-59 (37.3%) from the floor, including 7-of-21 (33.3%) from three-point range, and 9-of-11 (81.8%) from the foul line. Emmanuel shot 16-of-54 (29.6%) from the field, 1-of-7 (14.3%) from three-point, and 11-of-19 (57.9%) from the charity stripe.
The Bantams return to the court with a non-conference road trip to Roger Williams University Wednesday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
