BRISTOL, R.I. – The 13th-ranked Trinity College Women's Basketball team were unable to overcome a slow start and foul trouble in a 62-56 non-conference loss at Roger Williams University Thursday night. The Bantams dip to 6-3 on the season, while the Hawks improved to a 6-2 mark.
The Bantams grabbed an early 8-2 lead at the 4:27 to play in the first quarter, but the Hawks answered with a 13-2 run over the final minutes of the quarter, paced by six points from Katie Galligan, to hold a 15-10 lead heading into the second quarter.
A layup from senior Reilly Campbell put the Bantams within two possessions, 19-14, with 6:54 to play. The Hawks started to pull away with a 9-4 run over the next three minutes. Roger Williams added a three-pointer from Galligan, while sophomore Lucy Dorion made a buzzer-beating layup to set the score at 31-20 at the half.
Senior Emma Wax netted five quick points for the Bantams to trim the deficit to 31-25, but Roger Williams responded with an 8-2 run to rebuild a double-digit lead, 40-27, with 4:23 on the clock. Trinity knocked down three buckets in the paint to work at the gap, but the Hawks added a pair of late buckets to make it 44-33 heading into the final quarter.
The teams combined for 41 points in the fourth quarter as three-point efforts from Wax and sophomore Maya Carnes put the Bantams in striking distance, 45-39. Trailing 52-41 with 5:35 remaining, the Bantams rattled off a 9-4 run, paced by three-pointers from sophomore Theresa Twardosky and first year Olivia Vick, to make it a 56-50 game with 47 second to play. Forced to foul, the Bantams put the Hawks on free throw line where they went 4-6 to lock up the 62-56 win for Roger Williams.
Wax led the Bantams offense with a team-high 13 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals. Campbell added eight points with a game-high 11 rebounds and a game-high four assists. Sophomore Samantha Slofkiss added eight points and three rebounds off the bench, while Twardosky and Vick delivered seven-point efforts.
The Bantams connected on 22-of-63 (34.9%) from the field, including 5-of-22 (22.7%) from three-point range, and 7-of-11 (63.6%) from the foul line. Roger Williams shot 17-of-49 (34.7%) from the floor, 4-of-14 (28.6%) from beyond the arc, and 24-of-35 (68.6%) from the foul line.
The Bantams will look to return to the win column when they host MIT in non-conference action Saturday at Oosting Gymnasium. Tip-off is slated for 3:30 p.m.
