HARTFORD, Conn. – The 13th-ranked Trinity College Women's Basketball team fell to visiting Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), 79-68, In a tightly-contest non-conference clash at Oosting Gymnasium Saturday afternoon. The Bantams dip to 6-4 on the campaign, while the Engineers improves to 6-2 overall.
The Bantams took control early as a three-pointer from junior Hannah Marzo put Trinity ahead 10-4 with 7:30 to play in the first quarter. Trailing 12-6, the Engineers battled back with 7-2 spurt to trim the deficit to 14-13 at the 4:24 mark. The Bantams closed the first quarter on a 12-5 run, featuring 10 points from senior Reilly Campbell, to hand take a 26-18 advantage into the second quarter.
Down 28-18 after an opening bucket from Trinity sophomore Samantha Slofkiss, the Engineers used a 10-0 run, paced by eight points from junior Angie Choi, to even the score at 28-28 with 5:50 remaining in the half. MIT pulled ahead 33-30 on a layup from junior Elisa Harvey, but Trinity used buckets from sophomore Lucy Dorion and Campbell to take a 34-33 lead into halftime.
The Bantams maintained their advantage early in the third quarter behind buckets from senior Emma Wax and Slofkiss to hold a 40-37 lead. Choi and junior Olivia Joseph jarred back-to-back three-pointers to give MIT the 45-42 lead at the 4:28 mark. Wax connected on a three-point play, and Campbell added a layup to even the score at 47-47, and then the sided traded baskets down the stretch as MIT held a 56-55 lead heading into the final period.
The Engineers pushed their lead to 59-55 from the free throw line until Campbell sandwiched a pair of buckets around a layup from Dorion to hand the Bantams a 61-59 lead with 7:36 to play. Tied 65-65 with 4:08 on the clock, MIT outscored Trinity, 14-3, over the final four minutes of action to grab the 79-68 win.
Campbell led the Bantams with a game-high 34 points, shooting 15-of-20 from the floor, with a game-high 12 rebounds, four blocks and two assists. The 34-point effort from Campbell ties Jennifer Hadfield for the fourth-most points in a single-game in program history, and with 15 field goals, Campbell matches the single-game record set by Taylor Murtaugh in 2013. Wax recorded 13 points with three rebounds and six assists, while junior Indi DelRocco dished out a game-high seven assists off the bench.
The Engineers won the rebounding battle, 45-33, while the Bantams dominated points in the paint, 50-26. Trinity converted 28-of-64 (43.8%) from the floor, 3-of-14 (21.4%) from beyond the arc, and 9-of-13 (69.2%) from the foul line. MIT shot 26-of-65 (40%) from the field, including 8-of-21 (38.1%) from three-point range, and 19-of-25 (76%) from the free throw stripe.
The Bantams return to the court following the holiday break when they host John Jay College in non-conference action December 30th at 1:30 p.m.
