Trinity Women's Basketball Stumbles At Bates

LEWISTON, Maine - Junior center Reilly Campbell (Wallingford, Conn.) dominsted inside with 31 points and 21 rebounds, but the visiting Trinity College Bantams came up short against the Bates College Bobcats in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) women's basketball action this evening at Alumni Gym.  Trinity, ranked No. 10 in the nation, falls to 20-3 and will close the regular season at conference rival Tufts at 3 p.m. with a chance to secure first place in the NESCAC for the second year in a row.  Bates improves to 12-10 overall and 4-5 in the league.  Senior Meghan Graff scored 22 points for Bates.

Campbell was a force, sinking 13 of 23 shots from the field but no other Bantam scored more than six points. Trinity led by eight points early in the second quarter after a Campbell layup but Bates went on a 10-0 run to go ahead, 27-25, with 3:26 left in the first half.  The home team held on for a 31-28 lead the break, but the Bantams cut the lead to one with 3:37 left in the third quarter on a trey by rookie guard Theresa Twardosky (Merrimack, N.H.).  Twardosky was the only player on the court Friday who made a three-pointer, finishing 2-5 from long range. Trinity was 2-12 as a team and Bates was 0-8 from three-point land.

The Bobcats protected the lead down the stretch in the third quarter thanks to Graff, who scored 11 of her 22 points in the stanza to pace Bates. She scored the final eight points of the quarter for the Bobcats, including a jumper at the horn to put Bates up 48-43 at the end of three.  Bates led, 56-45, early in the fourth frame but the Trinity defense did not yield a field goal the rest of the game.  The Bantams chipped away at the deficit, and trimmed the Bates advantage to 56-51 on a layup by senior guard Bria Fuller (Springdale, Md.) layup with 2:19 left.  Trinity scored on only one of its final three possessions and the Bobcats hung on.
