Trinity Baseball Holds On Against Eastern Mennonite

HARRISONBURG, Va. - Junior James Stefanowicz (Norwalk, Conn.) went 4-for-4 with three doubles, two walks, and three runs including the game-winning one in the ninth inning to lead the visiting Trinity College Bantams to a 12-11 victory over the Eastern Mennonite University Royals in baseball action this afternoon.  Trinity improves to 6-3, going 3-1 during its three-day trip to Virginia, and returns to New England to host No. 8-ranked Endicott on Saturday for a noon doubleheader.  Eastern Mennonite drops to 5-14.  The Bantams led, 11-3, but gave up eight runs before breaking the tie in their last at-bats.

Trinity senior tri-captain Patrick Dillon (Bronx, N.Y.) accounted for the game's first run with a solo homer to lead off the second inning, but the Royals tied the game in the bottom of the second with an unearned run off Trinity sophomore starter Michael Aceto (Hamden, Conn.).  Stefanowicz manufactured a run in the third inning on a walk, a wild pitch, and a steal of third before scoring on an infield hit by junior C Jack Ryan (Bethesda, Md.).  Stefanowicz doubled and scored on an error and Dillon drove home a second run in the fifth frame, but Eastern Mennonite again evened things up with two runs in the bottom of the fifth thanks to a two-run blast by Natty Solomon.

Trinity erupted for seven runs in the sixth inning, as senior tri-captain Colin Mann (Dedham, Mass.) starred with two singles, two steals, a run, and two RBIs in the inning.  Solomon belted a two-run double to highlight a three-run sixth for the Royals to make the score, 11-6, after six frames.  Eastern Mennonite added five more runs in the seventh inning to tie the game at 11-all, but sophomore LHP Jonathan Link (Holmes, N.Y.) held the Royals scoreless over the final eight outs to earn his first victory of the season.  In the top of the ninth, Stefanowicz and junior SS Jack Mathews (Westport, Conn.) smacked back-to-back doubles to break the stalemate.  Solomon reached base in the bottom of the ninth on an error,  but Link struck out the next batter and got the last out on a fly ball.

Mann, who went 3-for-5, and three other joined Stefanowicz as multiple hitters for Trinity.  Ryan was 2-for 4 and both Dillon and first-year William Sawyer (Easthampton, Mass.) were 2-for-3.  Trinity stole eight bases in as many tries but committed three errors.  Eastern Mennonite left 13 runners on base and had two errors. Aceto lasted 4.1 innings, allowing seven hits and two earned runs with a strikeout and two walks.  Link yielded two hits and walked two with 3 K's.  Will Waller allowed one run over 3.1 innings for the Royals but took the loss.
