Trinity Baseball Bests Bates In Division Series Opener

LEWISTON, Maine - First-year RHP Kody Perry (Greenbrae, Calif.) improved to 4-0, allowing two runs and eight hits with a walk and two strikeouts in six innings, to lead the visiting Trinity College Bantams to a 7-5 victory over the Bates College Bobcats in opening game of a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) East Division baseball three-game series this afternoon on Leahey Field.  Trinity pounded 12 hits and held off the Bobcats at the end to improve to 15-7 overall and 4-3 in the NESCAC East with its third win in a row.  Bates drops to 12-10 overall and 1-6 in the division.  The teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow at noon to close out the set.

Perry pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the first inning and the Trinity offense took a 1-0 lead in its second turn at bat thanks to a leadoff double by senior co-captain 2B Patrick Dillon (Bronx, N.Y.) and an RBI dingle by rookie OF Dylan Schnitzer (Huntington, N.Y.).  Bates got two runners on in the second frame with none out when Trinity turned a triple play to end the threat on a fly ball to James Stefanowicz (Norwalk, Conn.) who doubled off one runner at first base before the lead Bobcat runner was called out at second after an umpire's debate.

Bates recovered and took a 2-1 lead in the third frame on a two-run single by enry Jamieson, but the Bantams tied it up in the fourth when junior C Jack Ryan (Bethesda, Md.) led off with a single and eventually scored on an error.  Trinity jumped out to a 7-2 lead with two runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth inning.  Junior SS Jack Mathews (Westport, Conn.) highlighted the fifth frame with a double and a run scored, while classmate Yoshi Omi-Jarrett (Mill Valley, Calif.) doubled home Stefanowicz and came around to score the second run in the sixth.

Bates reliever Matthew Shrake shut down the visitors over the last three innings, and the Bobcats made it interesting with a run in the eighth and two more in the ninth.  Trinity junior RHP Ian Brown (Tampa, Fla.) ended the threat by striking out the lone batter he faced to collect his first career save.  Five Bantams had two hits including Dillon, Mathews and Omi-Jarrett whon all doubled once.  The Bobcats finished with 13 hits but left 11 runners on base and committed three errors.  Luke Linnehan took the loss on the Bobcat bump, falling to 2-4.
