AMHERST, Mass. - The Trinity College Bantams lost both games of a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) softball doubleheader at Amherst College, 2-1, and, 9-6, on the road this afternoon. The Bantams drop to 7-11 overall and 2-4 in the conference and Amherst is now 15-9 overall and 3-5 in the league. Trinity junior
Tiffany Stowers (Burke, Va.) was solid in the opener, allowing six hits and two runs, one earned, and two walks with six strikeouts and collecting the Bantam RBI. In the nightcap, Trinity sophomore SS
Taylor Mikolajczak (Johns Creek, Ga.) went 3-for-5, stole a base, and scored a run. Trinity heads to Hamilton College for two more NESCAC games tomorrow at noon.
Amherst scored in the third inning on an RBI single by Pool in the third and in the fourth with an unearned run. Trinity senior OF
Scarlett Gillette (Andover, Mass.) led off the top of the sixth inning with a single and the Bantam loaded the bases with a couple of walks. Stowers plated pinch-runner
Annika Haley (Marblehead, Mass.) on a fielder's choice and
Abigail Alper (Weston, Fla.) loaded the bases with a walk but Amherst's Moravek recorded the third out on a fly ball. Trinity junior
Hannah Mullaney (Hebron, Conn.) singled in the seventh inning but Abby Moravek left her stranded at second on a ground ball, recording a two-inning save for Mammoth starter Dani Torres Werra who fanned eight over her five scoreless frames.
In the second game, Trinity's bats woke up and pounded 12 hits but left nine runners on base.
Gianna Tito (East Hanover, N.J.),
Kennedy Rogers (Pomona, Calif;), who belted her second homer of the year, and
Erin Steed (Orland Park, Ill.) each had two hits for the Bantams and Tito also had two runs and two RBIs. Trailing, 2-0, Trinity broke out for four runs in the third. Steed led off with a single and scored on a Tito single and Mikolajczak singled, stole a base, and scored on a wild pitch to tie it. Rogers followed with her two-run blast to give the visitors a 4-2 advantage.
Amherst rallied and scored three times in the bottom of the third inning, including twice on a single by Jess Butler. Trinity answered in the fourth frame when Steed was hit by a pitch and scored on a Tito single. Tito advanced to third on a Mammoth error but was stranded and the game was knotted up at 5-all. Amherst scored four runs over the next three innings, however, and held the Bantams to just one more run the rest of the way. Trinity cut its deficit to 8-6 on a two-our RBI single by Alper and fellow rookie
Lizzie Nelson (Rickville, Md.) followed with another hit but Rogers was thrown out at home from right field on the play. The Bantams put two runners on base in their last turn at bat but the game ended on a liner to 2B by Mikolajczak that resulted in a double play. Stowers took the loss in the circle, allowing the sixth run in relief.
