WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Trinity College softball team fell 7-0 in game one of the doubleheader at Williams College and dropped an 8-4 contest in the second on Saturday. The Bantams moved to 9-17 on the season and 4-8 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference, while the Ephs improved to 16-14 and 9-5. Trinity hosts Middlebury College in a doulbeheader slated for 11:30 a.m. on Sunday.
Erin Girard (Bristol, Conn.) denied the home team two scoreless innings to open the first game on Cole Field including a 1-2-3 second frame, before the tough Williams two cracked a two-run homer in the bottom of the third for the eventual game-winning run. The Ephs tacked on five more runs across in the sixth inning, ignited by a solo homer by Sydney Flemming.
Taylor Mikolajczak (Johns Creek, Ga.) connected for the first hit for Trinity with a single up the middle in the top of the sixth to give the visitors its first chance to score after a walk in the first inning and an error by left field in the fourth put Bantams on the bags to split the outs. The sophomore stole second before a sacrifice by
Gianna Tito (East Hanover, N.J.) allowed her to advance to third to get into scoring position, but Trinity couldn't bring Mikolajczak home. Williams outhit the Navy & Gold 10-2 with both teams waling twice, while the Bantams left six on base and the Ephs stranding four.
In game two, Williams opened the second inning with Flemming's second home run followed by a single to left field put two on the board for the home team. in the third frame, Mikolajczak walked on a wild pitch which allowed
Alyssa Gazivoda (Poughquag N.Y.) score and snap Trinity's scoring drought. First-year
Abigail Alper (Weston, Fla.) doubled to right field as
Kennedy Rogers (Phillips Ranch, Calif.) and Tito scored to give Trinity's first lead, 3-2, in the third. Tito walked and Rogers reached first on a fielder's choice followed by a double steal to position the duo in scoring position before the rookie's two bagger.
Williams knotted the game in the bottom of third at three apiece before four runs in the fourth helped the home team take a strong lead. Mikolajczak crossed the plate for the Bantams fourth run in the fifth after a single to shortstop, a steal and a passed ball placed her on third before Tito's sacrifice fly brought her home. Trinity doubled its hits from game one, but Williams connected for 11 with five Bantams left on the bags and eight Ephs deserted.
