WORCESTER, Conn. — The no. 12 nationally-ranked Trinity College field hockey team posted a pair of second half goals to rally past upset-minded host Worcester Polytechnic Institute, 2-1, in a non-conference contest on Tuesday. The Bantams improved to 2-1 on the season, while the Engineers slipped to 0-5. Trinity returns home for its first home game on September 16 when the Navy & Gold hosts New England College Athletic Conference foe Colby College on Robin L. Sheppard Field.
The first quarter was tightly contested with neither team attempting a penalty corner and the visitors holding a slight 3-2 advantage in shots. WPI was outshot 5-1 in the second quarter but made the most of its only shot. After Arie Lang was tripped up in the circle, Eliza Dutson stepped up and buried a penalty stroke with 4:34 to go before intermission.Â
The visitors pulled even midway through the third quarter whenÂ
Brooke DiBiase (Chatham, N.J.) emerged from a scramble in front of the net as the first-year foundÂ
Jackie Frank (Longmeadow, Mass.) who snuck the ball through the goalkeepers feet for her first goal of the season at 38:56.Â
With the game knotted at one apiece,
Kylie Tierney (Garden, City, N.Y.) intercepted the ball in the midfield before beating a trio of Engineers of the run to break into the circle and feed it to
Katrina Winfield (Wilmington, Del.) for the picture-perfect finish and the Bantams eventual game-winning at 50:40.
"In the locker rooms, we talked about how to keep and build our confidence on the field with the emphasis of playing both with each other and for one another," head coach
Jessica Bergen (1st season) said. "We really gathered momentum in the fourth quarter to eventually come out on top because they stopped waiting for someone else to do it and just stepped up to get their job done."
The Navy & Gold enjoyed an 11-2 bulge in shots after halftime and were awarded 10 of the 11 second half penalty corners. Trinity played aggressive offensively with 19 shots and 15 on target with Frank leading the charge with 16 total shots. The visitors had 15 penalty corner opportunities, while WPI only attempted one for the home team's lone goal.Â
Olivia McMichael (Glenside, Pa.) amassed a pair of saves in net while earning the triumph for the visitors, while Ella Moreau denied 13 Bantams shots.
