HARTFORD, Conn. — After a pair of scoreless quarters,
Katrina Winfield (Wilmington, Del.) capitalized off a penalty corner in the third to hand the No. 12 Trinity College field hockey team a 1-0 victory in its home opener against Colby College on Saturday. The Bantams improved to 3-1 on the season and 1-1 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference, while the Mules dipped to 1-3 and 0-2. Trinity returns to the field on Sunday for a noon matchup against the University of New England on Robin L. Sheppard Field.
The Navy & Gold drew a penalty corner four minutes into the third quarter and allowed Winfield to net a goal of a rebound shot by
Kylie Tierney to put Trinity up, 1-0. Prior to the goal, the hosts attempted a trio of corner opportunities but couldn't find the back of the net.
"Katrina's rebounded shot demonstrated great reaction time on the field and the team as a whole played a very composed, confident game," head coach
Jessica Bergen (1st season) said. "We continue to improve every game we play and we are excited to be back at it again at home tomorrow."
The Bantams continued to play aggressive offense with 10 shots through the first three quarters as Emily Loeb turned away seven Bantam bullets in the net for Colby, including four off the stick of
Demi Janis (Cos Cob, Conn.). Trinity totaled 20 shots, with 14 on goal and the Mules attempted nine with six on target. Loeb tallied 13 saves and
Olivia McMichael (Glenside, Pa.) denied six in Trinity's net.
