HARTFORD, Conn. — With less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation,
Gabby Grattan (Milton, Mass.) drilled a penalty shot just inches above the fingertips of Colby College's goalkeeper to secure the Trinity College women's soccer triumph, 1-0, at home on Saturday. The Bantams improved to 1-1-2 overall and 1-0-1 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference, while the Mules fell to 1-3-0 and 0-2-0. Trinity remains on the pitch for a 1 p.m. Sunday matchup against non-conference for Wellesley College.
"We are very happy with this result, because we needed to get a win under our belts and it's always good when it's against a strong NESCAC opponent," head coach
Rachael Schroeder (5th season) said. "The team worked hard and our back line did a great job staying organized."
Mariana Cournoyer (St. Paul, Minn.) stood tall in the net for the Nay & Gold with all seven of the seniors' saves made prior to the Trinity goal, while MK Marshall denied a trio of Bantam shots and four total in regulation. The Trinity backfield didn't allow a single shot by the Mules in the remaining 10 minutes of the contest. In the 84th minute, Â
Elena Lindonen (Boxford, Mass.) spun passed Marshall for a close shot on goal, but Sarah Watchmen notched a defensive save as the shot danced along the edge of the goal line.
Colby outshot Trinity 12-9 as the visitors attempted seven on goal and the Bantams shot six on target. Grattan accounted a trio of shots for Trinity and Lindonen and
Sofia Quijada (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) both attempted two.
